Is This A Normal Takeoff?

Tue Jun 01, 2004 11:44 am

Just saw this photo, is this a normal takeoff? Looks very close to a tailstrike, do the pilots know how close the tail is to the ground?

Look at the flaps extended! It doesn't full extended flaps down when you are landing. It is take off not landing. If this picture that plane goes landing and it would be collasped nose gears when too high nose up! It is impossible too high nose up for landing position.

Big777jet, huh?, its a takeoff note the slats and not flaps. Also Md-80 aircraft normally have very steep takeoffs, they normally establish this after airborne though, that guy didnt.  Smile

This isn't that rare of an occurance for MD-80 aircraft. I see AA Mad Dog's do takeoffs like this one all the time...saw one today in fact.

Funny thing -- in order for the plane to get into the air, the pointy part in the front has to go up.  Big grin

As usual, perspective plays a big role -- the main gear is off the ground and the aircraft is probably at the maximum rotation angle until they've established positive climb and retract the gear. Not that big of a deal....

I guess like a lot of things a still frame or slow motion can accentuate any movement. What may seem quite normal in regular motion can seem peculiar when slowed down.

Still a very steep take off. What would he tell his dad if he scratched that nice plane!
