Jet America Service And Flights

Wed Jun 02, 2004 10:12 pm

quick question about the old Jet America that flew MD-80s out in western USA, I am looking at an old OAG book from 1985, and I never knew that JI flew FAT-ORD, how long did that last? Did anybody here ever fly Jet America and could comment on service, their experience, coach/first meal service. I remember seeing their flights full of out BUR to LAS, but then they discontinued their BUR service shortly thereafter. Thanks for your responses

I flew JetAmerica from DFW to LA (sorry, can't remember the airport but I believe it was LGB). The FA's were 1). very good looking and 2) very funny and nice (they liked to flirt... so did I. Fastest trip I ever made to CA). As I recall, they served eggs Ranchero for the coach breakfast. When we landed, everybody was lining up to get off the plane and the FA we'd been talking to lowered the rear stairs and said "follow me boys...I found a shortcut". Overall, I thought they were a great little airline.

I have a couple of their old timetables. It seems like they flew everywhere, MKE, SNA, BUR, LGA, DCA, MSP, PDX, SEA. Most of those cities were only served for a short period of time. I also remember reading an article about them, and they said that they gave little advance notice when entering a new city or adding a new route. They said it was so other airlines wouldn't have time to add competing service. Doesn't really make since though to just show up somewhere with no advertising or warning.

If my memory serves me correctly. I remember "SI" flying from LGB to DFW-STL and LGB to ORD-DCA. Using DC9-80 aircraft.

I tried the photo search section -- Jet America name is not on the airline name list??? How did you end up finding them?

I really like their logo and paint scheme

Just do an MD80 search for LGB. That is how I found the pic I did.

According to the book Deregulation Knockouts Round One, Jet America (SI) started service out of LGB in Nov 1981 with MD-82s to ORD. The fleet began with two, out of 10 initially ordered, and 8 eventually received. They also leased 2 707s (in full SI colors) in the summer of '84 for charters. They lasted until Oct '87 when the buyout by AS was completed. The MD-82s were absorbed into the AS fleet.

On a personal note I recall seeing a couple of SI MD-82s @ LGB waiting for pax, when I took a PS flight from LGB to SFO back in '83. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures.

September11:

Type "Jet America" into the key words box, click "airline" on the scroll-down box next to it, then do the search. They'll come up.

yeah, i remember most of the lgb routes, those were to las, ord, stl and dfw. they also early on flew las-dfw, stl-las, dfw-stl, stl-ord, ord-dtw, ord to oak, but the once daily ord-fat blew my mind. later they added sna-las, sna-pdx, sna-sea, bur-las, pdx-sea, sea-msp, msp-dca, i don't remember the mke service though. i miss great lil airlines like these

I remember flying Jet America from LGB to LAS. It was a nifty little airline with very nice staff and great service. On one landing at LAS they were having one of the famous dust storms with very high winds upon turning for final approach the aircraft buffeted and shuttered pretty badly, the Captain came on to explain that we all better buckle down tight as this was going to be an E ticket ride /old disneyland reference for the good rides/ The plane flew nearly sideways fighting that wind /crabbing/. We landed safely at a very strange angle that made it feel like the tires were going to rip off the gear and arrived ontime. I did note shortly after our arrival that there were many missed approaches and go arounds.
