New United Commercial!

Thu Jun 03, 2004 2:19 am

A new United commercial.

http://www.adage.com/

There are 8 commercials on the page. The United commercial is the SIXTH one down.

This ia a weekly column produced online by Advertising Age magazine. I read it weekly to see the latest ads. This week, there is a new United commercial following the theme from the other two new commercials.

A rather nice feelgood advert. Much better than the current BA "we wish it was the 80s again" one!

I think I have to agree with Richard--

I like it up to the point when granny opens the door--it just loses respect at that point.

Nice to hear Rhapsody in Blue back and you can't beat Robert Redford at the end!

The "rose" ad is not too bad. However there are still four words which need to be changed. IMO the four words "It's time to fly" needs to be changed to "Fly the friendly skies". Just my 2 cents.

"It's time to fly" sounds good on the ads, but when they try and incorporate it into the announcements made onboard, it comes out absolutely horrible.

"This is a destination check. This is United flight XXX to XXX. On behalf of your ground staff here in XXX, we would like to thank you for flying with United today, and enjoy your flight. Now, it's time to fly."

"Sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight. It's time to fly."

No thank you...

I saw it on TV, gives you a very "feel good feeling", very romantic in a sense, and I think it did what United wanted it to do...

It's time to fly works well with the commercials but definitely not for in cabin announcements

It looked like the terminal he was in was the TWA terminal at Kennedy. Look at the building structure and the famous "departure" sign. "oval shapped non digital sign"

I agree with the feeling that it's a little too cheesy.

And I agree that United should bring back the friendly skies slogan.

And I also agree that it's great to hear Rhapsody in Blue again...I remember being a kid and seeing/hearing the United commercials...I can't separate the two from each other them now.

That and the "Fly the Friendly Skies of United" are timeless.

And remember the commercial where the parrot plays Rhapsody in Blue on the piano?!!

I think the commercials are great. Almost makes me want to fly united! lol anyway, isn't gershwin on their safety videos? I think it's the background music in the safety video. It's been about a year since i've flown united though, so I cant remember.

"Come fly the airline that's uniting the world, come fly our friendly skies"
The ads are nice.

If I did not have the volume turned on I would have thought it was a Mother's Day commercial for the local florist. If these folks were in the auto business, what would they show, pot holes?

I really do like the rose commercial, but I kind of have to laugh when I see it. It seems to have a subliminal message. "Fly with United and by the time you finish paying for your ticket you won't have enough money left over to buy your wife a rose from the florist, so you'll have to steal one out of someone's front yard."  Smile (And BTW, those clippers you used to steal that rose? Make sure you put them in your checked luggage.)

The commercial is not bad but like LoneStarMike mentionend...

"Come fly the airline that`s uniting the world...." sounds better

I think when someone says "come fly the friendly skies" it may make you think of unfriendly things. It is a by product of the phrase. Also many people will make jokes out of that because flying isn't very friendly when you have a TSA person going through your belongings, and are delayed when ORD is snowed in. Flying by default isn't all that friendly, so I am glad that they changed to a modern catch phrase, although the friendly skies was a great one for the 90s.

Awesome ads by the way. They are quite relaxing.

That UA comercial with the rose was too sugarsweet IMO.

United sponsored the "Coupling" marathon on BBC America Sunday, so I got to see this commercial several times.

The "Rose" commercial is a very classy ad, and does harken back to the days of what used to be a classy airline. I hope they can get it back. What does't work is to have these "classy" commercials bringing in customers, and then when they show up for their flight to have a less than "classy" experience. Its the employees of United that have to back up that image. I thought the campaign with the jetway pulling up to different vacation destinations was also clever.

As far as the "Friendly Skies" campaigns - which were concepts developed by the Leo Burnett Agency. A question for those of you in advertising - does this mean that since United no longer uses Leo Burnett that they can no longer use that campaign?
Oh how I long for the day when the skies were truly Friendly!

United dumped Leo Burnett in 1997.

Since then it has retained Fallon, a subsidiary of Publicis Group.

Fallon also does ads for BMW and other high-profile clientele.

The unitedrhapsody website usually has the latest updates on these commercials--"rose" has been around for a few weeks now.

While I'm still getting used to the visual aspect of these new ads, I do think that the renditions of Rhapsody in Blue are really good.
