UK Airspace Closed?!

Thu Jun 03, 2004 2:58 pm

Oh dear.

Looks like all UK airspace is effectively closed, after major ATC failure at London en route centre.

Everything is grounded apparently although LHR approach is fairly active on my scanner at the moment.

From the BBC
===========

Computer failure grounds flights

All flights from UK airports have been suspended following an air traffic control computer system failure, British Airways has said.
Several airports including Manchester, Bristol and Newcastle say no flights have been allowed to take off for more than an hour.

The air traffic control centre at Swannick in Hampshire is reported to have been closed.

A BBC correspondent says no more information is expected before 1030 BST.

The more I read about the UK these days I have to wonder what the governments have been doing for the past years....

Railway service, a joke.
Road networks, a joke.

And now problems with the ATC.....

Fox news just announced it.

So, the question is? What the hell did pilots do before they had radios???

Apparently the problem is with a HCS (Host Computer System) at West Drayton - not Swanick. Gatwick - 1 flight ever 6 minutes is now leaving. Things should be getting better by 9am, but the knock on delays will take all day to clear.

It was West Drayton last time, too, wasn't it ? It was around April 2 years ago - I remember because I was flying NCE-LHR that day, and it was madness ! I was booked on a flight due out around 5ish, I got to the airport around 3ish, the BA handling staff were actually brilliant, really helpful - fortunately most of the flights that day were not full, so they were combining flights, I got put onto the flight that was supposed to have left at 1300, which eventually left around 1800. When I got to LHR, T1 was just mental - virtually no flights were leaving, thousands and thousands of transit pax were stuck with nowhere to go, all the luggage from outbound flights had been offloaded and was piled head high in the baggage hall, with little pathways in between to get to the carousels - it was just mental.

So what's it like today - similiar story ?

Yep looks like West Drayton and possibly Swanick went down too, major delays being reported (up to 90 mins so far.)
Most departures are being delayed, but not grounded, and aircraft with minimum fuel are being flown straight to the destinations.
Seems like its another NATS problem, I dont want to specualte so early as Ive just heard the story on BBC after waking at 08:00.
I wonder if MAN will get any diversions today from either LHR or LGW, loos possible.

The computers are back up now as reported by Sky News. All the regional airports are resuming flights except for those to London Airports.

How i smiled when Skynews put up a map of Britain, with Manchester Airport in Wigan, and Edinburgh as Newcastle lol.
Anyway Manchester and Newcastle are the first 2 to be reopened, with others opening, but with severe Delays (esp at Gatwick where only 4 flights have departed in the last 2 hours.)
I guess now the NATS is back up, its a question of when the aircraft will get their T/O slots, and lets not forget many of the regional airlines are going to have to be delayed Again esp on the MAN-LHR routes, so I personally think these are the flights most likely to be delayed or cancelled.

I can only remember a similar situation back in 1997 I think it was. I've forgotton what day it was but it was a big day for Palma Airport - Majorca because it was the main day in which they'd get thousands of pax from the UK coming in. I remember coming to the terminal (ok our coach was involved in a fatal incident on the way!) 5 hours late, and our British Midland aircraft still hadn't landed, landed about 2 hours later because of the huge delays because of the computer crash back in the UK.

Lots of angry holiday makers that day!!

I feel sorry for all the travellers who were delayed, but I was very happy that it was just a computer glitch.

When I heard that all UK airspace had been closed I feared the worst....

UK airspace was never closed.
Flights were prevented from taking off due to the flight data processing system outage to avoid increasing the already high ATCO workload, allowing them to prioritise aircraft already in flight.

Had the TV on most of the day, and have been amazed by some of the so called "experts" who were trotted out, who obviously didn't understand what they were talking about!

On the BBC Breakfast News this morning their "expert" was the travel editor of the Telegraph, who clearly didn't know much about ATC!

You should have seen the backlog of aircraft queing on the threshold of 27L when things got up running again. I counted 12 aircraft at one stage, not that that was unusual at LHR, but quite a sight.

Only this can happen in the UK.

We supposedly boast this new "all singing - all dancing" new ATC that is the "worlds most advance ATC system" and what does it do bring the UK's airports to a halt.

How the hell cant his be allowed and senior managers get away with it, is there no back up systems or computer to take over when one goes down. In industry companies and banks would not allow this to happen.

I know nothing (or very little) about ATC and computing but only these faults seem to occur in the UK, another international embarassment for the country!

Not exactly true. The brand new Irish ATC system packed up a few days ago, sending the controllers scrabbling for the backup.

Yes I was directly involved in this! Big grin My Dad and I were at EDI this morning for a 07.05 departure to BHX. All was fine until a BA Captain from a flight to LGW came on the public speaker and announced to the whole departure lounge that all BA services were delayed indefinitley. Then one after another flights got cancelled, the 6am KL flight was very lucky, just getting off the ground before the grounding!
So, as this was only a day trip, naturally we were sh!tting it!
The first LHR flight boarded at about 8am even though the current time of departure was 11am at the earliest!  Wow! THis was in hope of catching an earlier slot.
Then, completely taking the piss, the first flgiht to depart since the ground ing was....a BA flight to BHX!! We could have been booked on that!!
However, in the end it worked out ok, we departed at about 08.30, about 1.5 hrs late, it could have been much worse.....

KLM to AMS would never have been affected anyway if he stayed off the advisories, as it was the FDPS software at LATCC which crashed.

Even if it had affected ScOACC Ops' software, they could still have gone FIR working Pennine south of the border under a RAS or London Mil.

I get the feeling that yesterday was a slow news day and this incident got slightly over-hyped by the media. OK, so there were delays, but nobody was in any danger and its hardly a major international embarassment. Computers crash the world over.

... but according to your profile you work on an IT helpdesk!!  Confused

Computers crash the world over

Yes, but when my desktop PC goes on the blink it doesn't cause one of the world's busiest airspaces to grind to a virtual stop.

See point 1 above. Do you work for NATS or something?
