SFO-NGO For UA. Is This A Good Idea?

Fri Jun 04, 2004 2:36 am

With UA expanding iternationally, I am wondering if it would be a good idea for UA to fly SFO-NGO.

The only direct service from Nagoya to US is with NW. There is probably room another carrier to serve this destination, especially from the West Coast. I personally think it may work with daily B777. Or could the B763 serve this route non-stop?

What do you guys think?

If the route makes money, why not? If there's not enough traffic they won't do it. I'm sure at UA HQ they have some smart persons who know what they're doing. I mean, UA is still the best US airline, so I guess they know what they're doing.

They can use NH, and also AC will be operating a 763 on YVR-NGO, so there are plenty of star connecting opportunities, however I wouldn't count UA out. Their pacific presence is strong, and they are focusing on international routes, so they might go ahead. I wonder if the yields would be very good though. NGO has a lot of business, but not as much as compared to NRT. Maybe they will wait to see how AC does when the new airport opens. But if they open the route it wouldn't be with a 763, only AC operates them normally across the pacific from the west coast to Asia.

The new airport is set to open in Nagoya next year. Im sure UA is looking at the possibilities of operating Nagoya - Honolulu or Nagoya - San Francisco with B777s.

I believe ANA plans on making Chubu a major hub when it opens next year. I'm sure Nagoya-San Francisco is in the works.

Expanded service from Nagoya to the United States can very well be a possibility when the new Central Japan International Airport opens in February. There's also talk of JAL resuming Los Angeles service from Nagoya.

I welcome any and all US airlines to NGO. For the longest time the only flights to the US were NW to DTW and Varig to LAX. Now there is only NW to DTW or a connecting flight through NRT. If UA is to expand to NGO from the West Coast I think they would be well served by continuing service to somewhere in China Could help with loads and save on some of those nasty Japanese parking fees. While I will stay with NW, I think the competition will be good for the Chubu area.

I personally would love to see it. UA Certainly does have a good grip on Asia, and now the announcement of the application to start service to Ho Chi mine through HKG shows growth in Asia for UA. I am happy to see the ORD-KIX nonstop as well as SFO-PEK. The addition of NGO, if service is demanded, would certainly be a great addition to an already respectable Asian timetable. UA Would certainly have the corners of Japan covered. The more cities the better.

Star connecting flights are useless to many. I am a star gold from my travel on UA, and it is next to impossible to upgrade on other star carriers unless you rub the agents the right way. UA Status members can upgrade on LH fairly easily, but on anything else it is impossible. Why on earth would I want to take a AC flight out of NGO and not be able to upgrade easily when I could on UA? Alliances are great for accruing or redeeming miles, but upgrading is next to impossible. Having another star carrier at a potential airport does not make any difference for those of us who use our mileage to upgrade.

I am excited to see any and all additions to and within Asia on UA.

On another similar note, Looking at airlines like DL who only have one flight one time a day (ATL-NRT) is a joke. DL Calls itself a major US airline and they have absolute bare minimum service to Asia and no service to Oceania??

In my opinion, I think UA should seriously consider directly flights from San Francisco to Nagoya once the new airport opens just outside Nagoya. The 777-200ER UA flies is small enough that the CASM on such a long flight should be not that expensive.

The reason is simple: Nagoya is woefully underserved, especially considering the fact that Nagoya is not much smaller than Osaka and Nagoya has a huge industrial base (e.g., the Toyota Motor Company for starters) that could generate quite a lot of premium class traffic.
