BA Flat Beds Or LH/SQ/LX/QF/AN Slant Beds?

Fri Jun 04, 2004 10:57 am

Eventhough the BA flat beds are quite narrow and a little on the short side, would you as a traveler prefer them to the "lie-flat on an angle" beds which LH/SQ/LX/QF/AN, etc., are introducing to their fleet?

As both products provide the same bells and whistles, I guess it comes down to the width/length versus the angle of the seat issue...

Dear Fly777ual,
I have flown a lot on BA and LX premium classes and I have to say that there is absolutely no doubt about it..... the BA club Beds are far better, definitely not in the same league with the "new" swiss lie flat/sliding seats... I can definitely have 7 hrs of non stop sleep on BA but will never have it on LX.....I can even go further on a 747 I don't have to fly first class anymore a club world upper deck window seat is just perfect.

I have also found the lie flat parallel to the ground beds / sleep seats to be better experience than the lie flat on an angle.

I have yet to experience BA Club seat, but even the aging UA First pods are more comfortable than the brand new A345 raffles. The fact that you are not parallel to the ground makes gravity work against you when you are sleeping. I like being able to sleep on my side or on another strange position on a flat bed rather than me strapped in to a horizontal plank............

Firstly What do you mean by AN????? AN is GONE for so LONG already and they never had a New J Class product.

Secondly, BA and VS (Suite) is the best. I don't understand why all the other airlines went to the slant angled bed option?? (even CX). According to CX, they said people prefer the slant rather than Lay-flat, and also prefer to sit facing forward.

I must say 180 Flat is the best. I really enjoyed the Club World better and slept much mroe comfortably. I know it is a bit narraw, but overall it is still better than finding half of your body on the floor!

BA Flat Beds!! AAA rating!

Also agree with the 744 Upper Deck Club World!!! More Spacious, Less people More Room More toilets. More Snacks in the Raid the Larder!!!

For eg. the SYD-LHR route, more people prefer to be on the BA flights than the QF ones (even with the new Sleep beds (which is again, is angled!!!) How come the airlines have to introduce a product that obviously no one likes!

One interesting fact I noted in that SAA also introduced a 180 flat bed as well But it is ALL forward facing. Has anyone tried it???? (also not the seat is in parallel to the window (so won't be like VS where you can't see the window properly)

The slanted bed is beyond me, and who did CX ask if they preferred it over a truly flat parallel to the ground bed???!!!

I do prefer to sit facing foreward, but the slanted bed is truly a mystery to me.

I don't know?? I just think that CX should've gone that Flat Bed rather than the Slant Bed.

I mean If I need to choose between Slant and Seating Backwards but Flat. I will choose the latter and I think >50% of pax will fell the same way.

I would feel the same way. I would rather be next to the toilet facing backwards with a flat bed than in the first row on a slant. The thing that bugs me is that most of the seats I have seen that go slanted do not really save a ton of room. Is not the point of sleeping to truly "get off your feet" for awhile and rest? Sitting semi upright in a slanted bed supporting your body weight with your feet ruins it for me.

just about the forwards backwards facing seating.... at first I was quite reluctant to be seated backwards but after done it I really didn't notice any difference..... When I fly the 744 upperdeck I even ask for a window seat (always facing backwards) as they have a little storing area next to the window.... I have to agree the facing of the seat is not such an issue as long as it's flat !!!

Yep, I think Definitely Flat rather than Slanted!

Also the backward facing seats are not that bad (esp on the upper deck (It feel you have a private cabin (with the divider and the window and also the personal storage bos on the side!

So anyone tried the SAA Flat seats??
I think they must be the first in the world where it is forward facing, NON ANGLES, Fully Flat J Class seats

I think that the point should be that while they are slanted ,and yes i will admit that fully flat is better, that they are still a big improvement over the traditional Business seats. I find the new slanted seats to be great regardless!

I agree QantasFlyer.

Stretching out on a flat surface is very nice indeed. Laying down on a flat surface is even better. I have been pleased for the most part with the recent (starting maybe a year ago) upgrades of Biz products from a number of carriers. LH new Biz on the A346, spacebeds on SQ, Virgin, they are all very good products with an extreme increase in comfort. I hope other airlines (read United) follow suit and upgrade premium cabins sooner rather than later. I guess they need some money first though.........hmm, they will have to work on that one.

Being a HUGE LH fan they sometimes do frustrate me. I have had great luck with truly superior service in both y and J. In y everything is okeydokey except for no PTV. Of course when they introduce it they will have state of the art systems that hopefully wont have the box at your feet. As for the new J product the cabin looks great and a lot of the storage lighting and entertainment are top notch however a slant flat? Common LH if your gonna blow a ton of money on a new product why not jump to the front of the pack? Will the Red Barron ever learn?

I was hoping for a pure flat seat to ORDagent. The Reccaro leather is nice though.

SQ needs to be the official IFE provider for Star Alliance. KrisWorld on every plane would be a dream. Hopefuly they can do something with that damn box at your feet through in Y (especially on the A345, i cannot belive they have thos ehuge boxes down there, people on the isle seats have it the worst, at least the window one is curved a bit).

Although I love the BA Club product, I'm affraid SQ's Raffles seat is better due to its width and comfort.

Being a BA employee, I do love Club World and have no complaints about the seat, the cabin or the service...but, I have been lucky enough to fly SQ Raffles and must admit the width of that seat is impressive. It was strange lying at a slant at first, but I did manage to get a full nights rest from LHR to SIN.

Have flown BA and love their flat seats. I always ask for a window for privacy and hope for upper deck for the extra storage - almost like a suite!

Will be flying QF again later this month and look forward to trying the tilt bed. The only reason I can see for a tilt bed is that it allows an extra row of seats in at least one of the sections.

Unless the QF bed is really special I will always be trying to get a flight with flat beds.

I think you will be disappointed, all my colleagues tried the QF tilt bed from SYD-LHR and they told me they will all switch back to the Club World Product next time.

It is nice, but as I said before and many people agree, the tilt just doesn't work. Flat is Flat and I just couldn't sleep at an angle.

We can take LH out of this discussion, they don't really care what their pax think. They have really perfectioned the skill of knowing how little service is just enough to fill their planes.

An anecdote to that: I recently flew on the new LH C class on MUC-PVG. I had to change seats two times because the mechanics did not work. The slant seat was not exactly comfortable, it is more like a plank of plastic - flat, yes, but not horizontal. The IFE is a bit of a joke, no video on demand, but just more channels than before of perpetually repeating movies. At the end of the flight, the FA asked me how I had liked the new business class, and I said "As usual on LH: it is just OK, but really nothing to write home about. I prefer horizontal seats." She replied that horizontal seats take up more space and that would be less economical from a company's point of view. When I replied that I had answered from a passenger comfort point of view rather than from a shareholder point of view, she gasped at me.

My judgement: LH is great for gauging pax needs vs. economic return, but really nothing more than the bare minimum to be considered a decent airline. THey are no longer a premium carrier.

I flow First Class on BA 777 and it's absolutely fantastic. One time, coming back from Atlanta to LGW, I was sleeping like to be in my home bed.

I hope I will try Club World flat bed this summer. And I think I would have better sleep in a fully flat floor parallel bed than in a one with an angle with the floor, but I can't say it...I've to try them.

Ciao

Judging from most of the response, Flat seats (Parallel) is the prefered option.

i mean from an airline perspective, the setup surely wouldn't be that bad from a financial view point

(Remember BA still managed to get a 2/4/2 config in the 744 and 777 cabin)

Why do all other airlines except VS and SAA don't adopt this config????

ALSO has anyone tried the SAA J Class Flat bed???????
