Pinnacle And Mesaba -- Anything Noteworthy?

Fri Jun 04, 2004 10:58 am

Having purchased future travel on NW, part of my journey will involve a leg of my trip on Pinnacle Airlines on the way there and Mesaba Aviation on the way back.

Aircraft types aside, are there any significant differences? Anything that I should know? Anything (from an aviation enthusiast's point of view) that I might be interested to know?

By the way, I will be on Pinnacle from MEM-JAN and Mesaba from JAN-MEM.

Any information is appreciated!

Well, im assuming the Mesaba flight is an Avro RJ...right?

If so, its pretty easy to assume that:

Pinnacle = Cramped

Avro RJ = Roomy

Basically watch out for that...no other real significant differences.

I fly for Pinnacle. That's kinda scary in itself.  Smile

THe CRJ is a really nice, quiet and smooth airplane. Youll enjoy it... a bit of a sardine can, but a comfy one.

Your assumption is correct. The Pinnacle flight is on a CRJ.

The Avro RJ will be a treat...very spacious...lots of legroom and it seems like the seats are wider. The Pinnacle CRJs are about as comfortable as CRJs can get, they're not bad. Pinnacle and Mesaba seem to be excellent regional carriers. Enjoy your trip.

The Avro RJ's are awesome. I'm at 6'4", it's the only plane I've ever felt comfortable on. I got off from a NW 757 and onto the Avro from Mesaba, felt like I was in first class or something.  Big thumbs up

Flew on Pinnacle, MEM-JAN-MEM, actually with XFSUGimp....nice short leg, regardless of legroom...when I was on it, the flight was 1/3 full...or 1/3 empty, dep. on how you look at it  Smile

The YHZ service is a perfect example how the CRJ is doing good things. I'm a bit biased to my avro, because the CRJ doens't come close to being a real airplane, when compared to the chubby. However, the CRJ is the perfect airplane to create better and more options for the customer. Last summer DTW-YHZ was 1 flight daily using an avro. It left DTW in the PM and returned in the AM. With the CRJ, they've expanded to 2 daily flights giving the passengers more frequency, while building capasity in the market. THis route was one of those that proved itself last summer, but also didn't need the premium cabin. So as a result, YHZ will see double daily service this summer and a year round single daily flight. So, unfortunately it will be cramped, but NW sees potential in the route enough to increase capasity. Everybody wins when that happens.

Block time on the YHZ runs are 2+50 going and 3+10 or so on the way back. Thats a pretty long run. I've got a couple YQB turns this month- that will be nice. Canada is really pretty this time of the year.

The CRJ isn't that cramped..just needs the windows cranked up a couple inches.  Smile I find I sleep better on them than i do in coach in an Airbus. It's probably that im more used to the sound and the way it feels going through the bumps, though.

Wow, people DO fly to Jackson,MS!! What is the special occasion??

Actually, not a bad city that I could see, being there once overnight in 1997. Being in the Spring, it was warm and not humid yet.

So, I have no info on topic, so I'll shut up! Have a fun trip.

May as well go into detail on my hop with XFSUGimp (Denny), just to further the case for Peanucke.

Had the privilege of flying with him when he came to my hometown of JAX, Florida...used my Delta Non-rev card to get an ID-95 and flew with him to MEM (something like $26 lol), was the very last person aboard! Hour turnaround, then down to JAN and back up to MEM again, reasonably empty flights. Unfortunately, I book my non-rev plans on the fly, so NW did the "SSSS" trick on me...Delta has never done it to me before, so I was feeling a little cheated  Big grin

Very smooth the whole way, Captain was a pretty cool guy, let a little kid up in the cockpit and let him make a "happy mother's day" PA, and play with the yoke a little bit. Denny on the other hand...lol j/k...did just great, nice Air Force-style landing. He said something like "and Navy guys don't even know what a flare is"...my reply simply was, "yeah, a flare is something you carry in your survival vest for when you get shot down  Big grin) Overall, awesome time, and my first time on NW and in MEM, so great time, will do it again soon!

Anybody who can get on his plane..do...it's not your average flight crew  Laugh out loud

Interestingly, Mesaba's Avro RJs are one of the few US regional carrier's jets to have a first class cabin (another one would be Mesa dba America West Express RJs).

Thanks for all of the comments thus far!

Bad news... I got an e-mail from NW this morning and the JAN-MEM flight has been changed to mainline service, with the DC-9-30. I say that this is bad news because this would have been my first flight on the ARJ and I was looking forward to it. The MEM-JAN flight remains as a CRJ operated by Pinnacle.

Sprxflyswa, no real special occasion in Jackson, really. This September, we're just checking out the south, with stops in Jackson, New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile, etc. Since we're driving from place to place, it didn't really matter where we landed and JAN just happened to be the least expensive.

I look forward to it.
