New NW Terminal In DTW

Fri Jun 04, 2004 12:36 pm

I have not paid a visit to Northwest Airlines' new terminal in Detroit - just yet.

I am curious if anyone been to their new terminal? Is NW happy with new terminal? NW employees like it?

Any differences between the old and new terminal? Advantages and disadvantages?

Thanks

Well the fact that it's all modern facility with a new tram system. Now if we had the right staff working in it, things would be a lot nicer. They are adding on an addition to the B&C concourse for the increasing RJ traffic.

Ah-ha! That solves the mystery of the sign I saw in October about a new "20 gate addition". I thought it would be in the "A" terminal and that would definately make it too long to walk!

Smcmac32msn,

I believe the original plan was that the Pinnacle/Mesaba gates currently in place would only be a temporary solution. I'm glad, since they are unbelievably claustrophobic, especially for a new terminal.

Well for anyone who is new to this.

They have to tear down the C concourse because they built it too small. The C concourse will look like the B concourse when it is completed I believe.

Is that need to make more space into the concourse B or C?

The new Northwest WorldGateway is a fine structure. It's shaped like an H, with the cross being an underground tunnell connection B/C to A.

B and C are being enlarged to accomodate more CRJ flying in C, and Delta and RJ flying in B. I don't know if CO will be getting any of the additional gates on B, but if they plan to expand, they ought to.

The terminal won numerous prestigious awards. An architectural magazine gave it high marks for its simple design, water feature and overhead tram that rides on a cushion of air.

The public ranked it one of the three best airports in the U.S.--LAS was number one and MSP and DTW tied for second/third.

It's very impressive, so if your travel includes NW, try to make a stop at Worldgateway!

On Tuesday, CSA's and and aircraft groomers will demonstrating outside of the the World Gateway, protesting the furlough of CSA's in favor of hiring new Skycaps. Other labor groups at Northwest are expected to join in support as well.

The "new" NW Worldgateway is one of the best facilities in the world! Clean, open and very, very modern.

The only drawback to the building is for spotters. There are no places to get any good shots, and those damn windows are not clear! They have a frustrating pattern in them that prohibits any good shots from inside. And that is a pity, 'cause those 747-400's look great when they are parked right in front of you!

The Parking garage is outstanding. There is never a long walk to the terminal.

The one thing that ticks me off though, are the Wayne County police at the arrivals level. They could use a Dale Carnegie course! They are the rudest people on the face of the Earth.

The World Gateway Terminal, aka McNamara Terminal (I'll never say that on the PA) has won the J.D. Powers and Associates award from frequent flyers for two years in a row, being one of the top 5 airports in the world. It is a great facility and easily navigated.

I have never been there, but my brother has and constantly rants and raves about it. I have driven by it several times and it does look fairly impressive. I can't wait to actually be in it some day.  Big thumbs up

I could tell you now that it is a 1000% improvement (  Big thumbs up ) over the old one...the old one would get so crowded that people would be sitting on the floor down the hallway..DTW has gone from being one of the worst terminals to one of the best in my opinion  Smile

I've been at the new terminal a few times while making flight connections (on NW, of course); my main complaint is the lack of available food concession facilities in the area. The ones that were there (at least a year ago when I was last there), are sparsely spaced. Hopefully, that will change as time goes on and more shops move in.

I will say though that the McDonald's facility in the terminal is one of the more efficient Mickey D's I've seen in a while. Even with a long line, one can come and get an order fairly quickly. It could rival the Braintree, MA Mickey D's, which IMHO was (at least in the late '80s) the most efficiently-operated one I've seen to date.

PHLBOS,

I don't know what part of the terminal you were in, but there is a very wide choice of food outlets in the terminal. I am there at least twice a week, and can tell you, there is a great variety.

Again, as I stated above, my observations are about a year old. No doubt, some shops and food outlets were added. During my first visit at the terminal in 2002, everyone was complaining about the lack of shops and concessions.

Most of my flights to/from PHL park towards the center of the terminal or at the opposite end (gates 1-28). I've also been at the C Concourse for my flights to/from TOL.

Am I the only one that thinks the new terminal is overrated?

Gate areas facing east on the north side of the concourse(DC9 gates) are too small and crowded. The huge TVs are worthless and uncomfortable to watch. The tram is almost useless because it has only 3 stops...leaving you with a long walk if your flight is in between(Although not as long as the Davey Terminal) the concourse entrance and the tram stop at the end of the concourse. If you have a gate at either end it is ok. The escalators to the train station are extremely crowded because they didnt build enough of them. The food court when you enter the concourse is in a horrible place for foot traffic and is poorly designed.

To me I think its beautiful, but way overrated and not nearly as functional at DEN or CVG's B. It fits its namesake....

Has the train/tram been repainted with the new logo... yet?

Hindsight being 20-20, if NW wanted to change their look/livery/logo etc.; they should've done it before the new terminal opened and receiving their 753s.

Did any NW A330s come out in the older 'bowling shoe' livery?

Usatoeze:

I'm sorry, but there are no "long walks" at the NW Worldgateway. The moving sidewalks are designed to eliminate this and run strategically through the terminal stopping at concession areas.

The tram along with the moving sidewalks moves traffic very well through the entire building.

I actually like the red train.. I hope they don't change it. As most of the walls in the building are off-white/grey/silver people probably wouldn't notice the train wizzing overhead if it was in new livery colors.

As of now it looks like a red bullet shooting down the terminal. It's a great brand statement.

Regarding the train: my guess would be if they haven't done so already, I would see them just modifying the logo but keeping the red color (which still exists on the tails of NW's planes).

I became quite familiar with DTW during my days as a grad student at UM, but I hadn’t been to the ‘new’ DTW until last night, when I connected there for a flight to EWR (so I have no idea about parking, curbside access etc.). The old DTW was unpleasant, the new one (well at least concourse ‘A’) is instantly my favorite airport. Yeah, the design is great: bright, open and pleasant, but I think it is the mundane things that make it so good, like the spacious waiting areas, and putting restaurants right across from some of the gates, so you can actually watch the boarding status of your flight from your dining table (e.g., the ones near Gates 70-74 mentioned by 7E72004 above) Also, the airport has come up with the clever idea of concentrating the mall retail shops in the center of the ‘A’ concourse, and lined the concourse itself with restaurants and shops that sell things that are indispensable to air travelers (like a kit-kat and the newest issue of the Economist). I have nothing against mall retail at the airport, but it is annoying at some airports, like EWR’s Concourse ‘C’, where the paper/candy shops are infrequently-spaced between the innumerable USGA Golf Shop/Brookstone-type places.

As DTWClipper notes, this is not the best place to spot. There is something strange about the windows, I took some pictures and they were very patchy (probably not enough light as well the strange windows). But actually, the views aren’t too bad if there is an open gate on either side of the a/c you are looking at. Got some great looks at the A330s in that new NW livery. Unfortunately I didn’t see any 747s.

Usatoeze: I was on a NW DC-9/50 last night, the gate area was more than large enough to accommodate the waiting passengers. I agree with DTWClipper, the tram/moving walk way system is very well integrated. The Tram functions as the “express” and the moving walkways as the “local”. You are right about CVG ‘B’, it is very good too, I prefer MSP/DTW, but maybe that is because if I’m in CVG ‘B’, then I’m flying DL and so I’m in an unpleasant state of mind.  Big grin Don’t understand your comment about the Food Court, I will have to take a closer look next time. The restaurant options and location seemed quite good.

Along with MSP, another terrific airport, NW now has two of the best facilities in the U.S. as its major hubs. NW keeps getting better.

I changed planes there twice two years ago, I found it to be an excellent facility. Very easy to get around the airport and a decent amount of concessions. Customs and Immigration was amazing, I was probably out of there no more than 30 minutes after I got off the plane. Unfortunately, I don't have an opportunity to use this airport anymore unless I double-connect since there are no flights from Wichita to Detroit (hope there will be someday soon). I've been to CVG's terminal 3 concourse B many times and I prefer the WorldGateay by far...CVG's B is really nice but I think the WorldGateway just sets the standard.

Wasn't the old Airlink setup similar to CVG's Terminal 3, Concourse C where everyone sits down in one area and waits for their flight to be called? With the new Airlink gates, will you be able to sit down at your gate like MSP's Concoruses A and B? (which are very nice, btw)

The "Nwunnel" is probably on of the neatest features of any airport I've been in. I remember the first time I went through and was amazed that this space had not been used to hit people with advertising. Thank god for that!

Nope - their first A330 unveiled the new livery.

Another vote of approval for the tunnel - it feels like you're in a giant aquarium when you're inside, while in actuality you're only a few feet below a couple 757s and a 744. Very cool.

I remember flying out of the old terminal, with the orange-brown seats in the waiting areas. It was a long time ago, but that image sticks with me. The new World Gateway is a great airport to connect through. I especially like the water feature in the middle of the airport right next to the tunnel. I flew GRR-DTW-MSY and GRR-DTW-TPA this year, the first time ever going through that terminal. It was easy to get from gate to gate, easier than at MSP (though MSP has more shops and food it seems). Our flight left late from GRR, we had to get from Terminal B to Terminal A with only a 35minute layover, all this with my friends step Dad in a wheel chair, and we still made our flight with plenty of time left over. The tram is especially helpful for handicapped passengers. My only complaint is the little dots on the windows, those are so annoying! Other than that the new terminal is great.

My issue with the tram and walkway is simple. The tram's function works perfectly if you are going to the ends of the concourse, but if you are a gate equidistant to the end of the terminal and the middle where you enter it is a long walk with the moving walkways, or let me say too long of a walk. The tram should have been designed a little better, and at least someone on here has to admit that the tram stops need more escalators up and down.

The food court is chaotic at 9am, which is similar to most airports. DTW is not supposed to be most airports. Instead of making the food court a walk through like MSP, PIT, etc it is a cavern. At 9 the cavern is crowded with people, who then spill out into the little shopping area and space between security and the gates. Its an average setup. I am by no means saying it is bad, just way overrated.

Many gates work perfectly well with the 319s and DC9s, but there are 12 gates that I can think of that are narrow and confined even for 100 seaters. These gates are the gates to the northeast facing the terminal proper as look down the concourse just past the entrance. I was standing in the middle of the concourse for a DC9 quite a few times the past few years. That doesnt mean that there arent gates that handle them, its just that at least 10 are too small.

Its a nice terminal, but I think its more style than substance. On the outside its beautiful. On the inside there are many airports with better designs(PIT, CVG B, and DEN in my mind)..not to mention about 10 around the world that seem much better(SIN, KUL< HKG, HEL off the top of my head). For all the time and hype associated with it..I was disappointed with it from the first day I flew in it 10 days after opening.

My mother, a NWA Flight Attendant, is based there, as well as most, if not all of her FA friends, and she loves it. And so do I! The fountain representing NWA's worldwide network going to the center, resembling DTW, the tunnel, which I LOVE, and by the way, the UM room (located under the escalator in the center going to the mezzaine or tram, I forgot.) is the same design as the tunnel, only it has 20+ kids packed in like sardines, and an Northwest Airlines Kid's Club logo, the architecture, convenience, and other things I forgot since my last visit in 2002ish.

P.S. To NWA flight attendants who don't know this yet: The stopover store comes in next week in the FA area.
P.P.S. If you see an Asian FA that is a little dark, talking to friends, and with an ID Badge that scares you away, that's most likely my mother.
