Differences In Riding A 747-200 Vs. -400

Although I have ridden both, I flew a -400 recently and hadn't ridden a -200 in more than 11 years. Has anyone flown both models recently and offer a comparison in regards to:

1. Comfort.
2. Noise
3. Performance (i.e. take-off, landing)

I still haven't made up my mind whether I like the -200 or -400 visually. I like the winglets and increased capacity of the -400. However, I still feel that the -200 looked sleeker and the engines looked more impressive.

I'm not sure, but I think the upper deck is a bit smaller (length, and width wise, also maybe height).

Apart from that maybe slightly more noisy cabin.....

Again I'm not sure...... these r just possibilities that I think....

in this light i can only compare compare BA 747-236 and 747-436.

Obviously, the -200 has a short upper deck. Also it has spiral stairs, as opposed to the -400 which has a straight staircase.

i remember the -200 being less comfortable...the -400 felt slightly smoother (don't ask me how I formed this opinion) but I couldn't tell a difference on take off power. Of course there are other factors that may come into play here.

I love the looks of the classic -100 and -200. but theres also something to be said for Boeing 747-400s with RB211s...simply beautiful.

As AirxLiban said, the B742 has the spiral staircase which is different to the B744 which has one straight staircase.

Having flown on PW powered B747-200s, the takeoff has this type of low rich sound (less powerful sounding) which is quite distinct compared to the B744 (whether it be PW, GE, or RR). The B744's engines are more powerful which also can be heard from the takeoff.

I really can't tell the difference when it comes in flight, where noise levels are concerned.

Some NW 747-200's have straight stair cases to the upper deck, others have the spiral stairs. All 747-400's have straight stair cases. From a passengers perspective, I don't see how the ride would be more enjoyable in one over the other.

I think everyone expressed the right thoughts about these airplanes. I have flown on the 747-200 but did not have the privilege of flying on the 400 yet. But from what I gather from 747 pilots who have flown both models they prefer the 747-400. I've flown on the 200 six times and recall once sitting in the sixth seat from the last row. That was one noisy bumpy ride.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

That's why my favorite 744s belong to Qantas and BA. I love those RR engines.
