WN: Chances Of Getting A Canyon Blue Aircraft?

Sat Jun 05, 2004 12:19 am

Hey guys...

It's been a while since I've flown WN; in the past they've been one of my last choices in travel. However, it's been a few years and I thought I'd give them another try. (That and the times & price were a lot better then DL)

Anyway, my question is: what are my chances of getting on one of the newer "Canyon Blue" aircraft that feature the new interior and winglets?

I'm flying WN 1723, SEA - SLC; returning on WN 5744, SLC - SEA. My flights are in the 1st week of July.

How has the WN experience changed (if at all) in the last 2 years or so?

Thanks.

Yes, it is Canyon blue on WN of those aircraft.

All of them Scotty? Because I've seen a lot of the "old" style-WN planes in SEA. How do you know they're all the "new" style WN planes?

They rotate 733 and 73G over that service, more then 50% of the fleet is still in old orange/sand colours and I guess about 80% have no winglets yet. I flew them two weeks ago, check my tripreport http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/44327/ so nothing special but worth the money.

Have any of the 300s been painted blue yet?

Yes, some of their -300's are in the new colors. I see a couple of WN birds in the new colors every time I go to Salt Lake Int'l but most of the WN birds I see are in the old colors. I fly the SLC-PHX route a few times a year and have never flown on a bird with the new colors on that trip, I don't know about the routes to SEA though.

As far as their service and style, nothing's changed. Except that the old plastic boarding cards they used to give with numbers (green, red, yellow, etc.) are a thing of the past. I miss them.

Yes there are many -300s with the canyon blue scheme and new interiors. There is also one -200 in blue, and last I heard there was only one -500 painted blue recently.

There are still many aircraft in the old paint, including many of the winglet-fitted -700s. I'd say it's about a 50/50 chance that you may get a canyon blue aircraft, but chances of getting on a -700 with winglets are much less.

Just to clarify.. I don't care so much about the paintjob, though it of course is interesting. I'm more interested in the new interior and how it differs from the old one; I'm interested in the change in the flying experience for the passenger. And of course, those winglets just look badass!  Big thumbs up

I personally liked the old interior on the newer -700's. The new leather they are installing is getting a lot of fat fanny use and showing a lot of wear and tear. It seems to me in my IMHO old style seats didn't looks as "used" as the new leather seats after a few months...

Did that make any sense?  Nuts

I recently flew on one of the old color WN planes but it had the sparkling new interior w/ leather seats. I guess you can't tell from the outside what you're getting on the inside....it's a crapshoot.

When are they planning on having all their planes in the new Canyon blue? And...all with winglets?

That may take some time, i mean from what i have seen in PHL. Not many are Canyon Blue, and WN does have quite a load of a/c. I'm sure they can't pin point a time when they think all will be refinished.

I'd agree with that statement..I work at Nashville, which is a busy WN base Southwest and I'd say prolly 50% of the flights I see now are the new livery.....which I still think is hideous looking.

See.. it's funny. I used to DESPISE the new livery with all my being (not that the previous livery was any good; I hate both liveries so much), but I have to admit, the Canyon Blue is starting to catch on a little bit with me. I think it's the blue, and the winglets together; quite striking. I just love the look of those big ol' things hangin on out there. I can wait to see the new AS 738's with winglets.. ooh ooh!  Love

What made Southwest get the winglets? It seems that a bunch of airlines started to get them once ATA started receiving their 737-800s with winglets.

Hey folks...

Here's some numbers for you on the "Spirit" interior modification status and the "Spirit" paint schedule:

The new interiors are required on 311 aircraft (3/5/7 series). 172 have been completed or 55%. The planned completion date is 12/05.

The new paint is required on 308 aircraft (3/5/7). 75 have been painted or 24%. The planned completion date is 12/08.

I could break this down further, but I don't want to.  Big grin

WN wouldn't do anything for looks. They save money. WN will spend to save anyday.

I fly WN a lot and have been on a lot of Brown birds recently. If you were flying a transcon segment, you would have better chance getting Canyon Blue with winglets than your routing.

Southwest is getting the winglets because they reduce drag on the planes which gets better fuel efficency. I can't remember how much they said it will save each year, but it's pretty significant.

Does that lone 732 in the Canyon Blue livery have the new interior like the newer 737s?

We had a WN charter a few weeks ago and it was a 737-700 in the new paint scheme with the winglets. According to the pilot the flight that the plane had just finished was its 3rd revenue flight. When you opened the cargo doors you still got the new plane smell. I was a bit surprised that we got one of those planes, we usually get the 700's with no winglets and the old paint job. But I would say your chances of getting a blue plane are prob 50/50 and one with the winglets? I would say your chances would be a little smaller, but who knows I really have no idea how many they have in service with the winglets.
