KLM Returning To ATL

Sat Jun 05, 2004 2:57 am

According to http://www.commercialaviationtoday.com/ and klm.com, they have announced that they are returning to Atlanta on Sep 15th. It was initally planned for Oct 31, but due to anticipated demand, the early date has been chosen. They will collaborate, as usual, with NW, and will use 767-300ER aircraft.

Correct, but this will also mean that the Miami service will stop on Sep 14th. Between Sep 15th and Oct 31st AMS - ATL will be 5x weekly, after Oct 31st it will be daily.

Can anyone tell me why KLM will stop flying to Miami?

I think Miami is a much more important O&D market than Atlanta. Miami has so much international business and liesure.

I think the atlanta flights would be great for a Delta codeshare, now that they are in Skyteam.

Does this have anything to do with Air France not wanting KLM to play in Miami?

An AMS-ATL-MIA flight might work.

Last time i checked ATL had the 4th highest O&D figures in the US, MIA was something like 15th or lower!

Our beloved airline called KLM is known for writing a press release with socalled "news" but in reality the press release contains 90% "old" news and 10% "new" news. People still think it's all news because they've missed the first press release (great marketing trick). Editors working for magazines or internet news service have to fill space thus welcome anyone with a press release (even if it doesn't contain any news).

The news itself was known in April and we discussed it then on this board together with the reason why KLM cancelled MIA. I personally expect at least another press release before they actually launch the ATl service (just to remind anyone that they'll start). The last thing KLM wants are empty seats on their ATL service.

BTW what you'll read in a KLM press release only once are cancellations of destinations and services which they announced but which they postponed or cancelled before it started. But then, this is bad news and you'rte not going to emphasize bad news.

ACAfan Officially, KL is not in SkyTeam yet, and their flights are not carrying codes for any SkyTeam member other than AF. [They already carry NW and CO - but they aren't SkyTeam either - YET] B4REAL

BigMac, last time I heard anything about what date KLM was to stop MIA service was Oct 31st of this year. I can't wait to nail a few shots of KLM when I'm down there this summer.

This all falls into step with the evolution of SkyTeam ... most likely handling to be done by Delta?

No KLM is not officially SkyTeam but won't they also be official in the fall, along with NWA and Continental?

Glad to see KL returning to ATL. Two questions:
1. Why are they dropping MIA?
and..
2. When will we see AZ?  Smile

Last time i checked ATL had the 4th highest O&D figures in the US, MIA was something like 15th or lower!

The Miami-area has three commerical airports, Atlanta has one.

The reasons for KLM Royal Dutch dropping MIA:
-With the new Air France merger, there is no reason for it. MIA-CDG is a high-yielding route, MIA-AMS is not. They are simply moving the traffic through Paris, where yield and demand is stronger. When they didn't have AF, Miami was a destination served more by nessecsity. It is an important and key trans-Atlantic market to have in the network. Even though KLM will no longer serve MIA, it will be in the network via Air France.
-While KLM is dropping MIA-AMS, Air France is increase MIA-CDG to 10w and Martinair Holland is increasing MIA-AMS to 6w.

MAH4546,

But don't discount the fact that Atlanta could definitely use another airport. The city of Atlanta has approximately 30 million O&D PAX a year.

I never discounted it. All I'm saying is that Atlanta has one airport to handle thier O&D numbers, while the Miami metro area has three.

Someone had mentioned the idea of having an AMS-ATL-MIA flight...well, with KL subsequentially going into Skyteam, they could easily funnel pax down to Florida on DL...so I don't see the purpose of utilizing KL's a/c for that run. Plus with DL's great network to FL from ATL, this will give passengers a more "targeted" choice of cities as opposed to having to fly into MIA, which is horrible in my opinion.

O = Origin
D = Destination

O&D: passengers who start or end their trip in that city, i.e. those who don't use the city to connect to another flight.

Worldoftui,

Don't let the topic police discourage you. It was news to me as well as I was in Brazil in April and didn't read these boards for a month. Apparently, some people on here read these boards EVERY day and know EVERY thing that has EVER been posted.
Thanks for posting.
