BA Club World Seats Upgrade

Sat Jun 05, 2004 7:50 am

I'm planning a flight with British Airways to Houston via London Gatwick.
Is anybody here who knows if British Airways already upgraded the seats in Club World from cradle seat to flat bed in the route LGW-IAH-LGW?

I've tried FIRST, I've tried Club World cradle seat, now I need to try the new flat bed. The only thing that sounds not very normal is that some of the people is seated in the wrong direction  Smile/happy/getting dizzy (I'm talking about the seats that are headed backward).
Do you think that be seated in the wrong direction would have some important influences?....Maybe more during take-off and landing....

All BA 777s (with the exception of the Florida and Island cities) have been upgraded with the new Club World and World Traveller Plus cabins.

Personally, it makes no difference to me whether I have a forward or rearward facing seat. I think for most people its psychological thing. But just ask for an aisle seat which are all forward facing if you are concerned. The new seats are 110% better than the old cradle seats!

Why not try CO BizFirst from LGW-IAH?

I've seen those ClubWorld seats and I have to admit... they look kinda nice!

Facing rearward is safer, just remember that.

Best overnight flight I ever had. BA 777 YYZ -LHR--Seat 10K- seated backwards. Fell asleep over Montreal, Woke up looked out the window and saw the orange of the sunrise reflecting off the massive engine with the reflection of British Airways on the side, clear blue sky and the green, green coast of Ireland below me. I love sitting backwards, I love the seats.
there is economy class, business class, first class...then Concorde..pure class

Yup, I had about the same experience in my Club World seat 13A on a flight from ORD to LHR last November. Seeing the British Airways writing reflecting off the engine cowl in the daylight was a nice sight (I should post the picture I have of it). Only thing is I was so hyped for that flight that I couldn't get any decent sleep on that trip. Plus, the fold flat seats seemed like they were a bit on the firm side, which I am sure they have to be because they are airliner seats and have to be durible enough for safety issues. I'm not used to sleeping on firm beds. If I ever get another upgrade like that (highly doubtful), I should be able to sleep okay in them.

I travelled in both the 777 and 744 with the Club World Flat Seats. I find the Uppder deck in 744 the best. However the 777 is not bad (get the window pair).

The middle pairs are the worst (4)

I think the usually allocate it for last minute upgrades/bump ups from WTP.

However I did notice BA have decreased their Catering service over the pasy 18 months. I hope they start improving the service. (I remembered they used to servce Nobu Food in J Class)

But in routes such as JFK-LHR/BOS-LHR, IAH-LHR where there is competition, usually BA wins in J Class and also F class (as none of the US airlines have the same product or service to compete).

Upgraded to Club World from WTP at the last minute on PHX-LHR-PHX last December, rear facing window seats both ways, awesome flights. Couldn't care less if the food service was good/bad/indifferent...the space was amazing. Enjoy!

Thank you guys for the posts.
My questions about the "problems" with a backwards seat are because it should be a little unconforable during take off (the acceleration and the initial climb). Does anyone think this? Is anybody that things is more confortable to be seated back-facing during this phases of flight?

AZA330, the rearward facing seat is the one to have. It is reclined enough for it not to be uncomfortable during takeoff and climb. I personally find the seats too narrow for sleeping horizontally because I sleep on my front, there isn't room for my shoulders.
CO Business First is good but it does not have the style or the class of the BA product. Wait until you see that cabin, it is incredibly stylish. Nothing in the world comes close. The service is not always as good as some other carriers but there is a sense of occasion about flying in a premium cabin on BA.
The customer is always right.....unless he is a passenger!

I flew EWR-LHR in Club world on the very last row (15 IIRC). I was facing rearwards and the only thing I found uncomfortable was having the WTP cabin sitting facing you before the cabin dividers/curtains are closed.

It is kind of off putting when you are there in your huge seat and they are all squashed in, well not as much as WT pax are, but still it wasn't a nice feeling.

When I woke before landing, the crew had opened the curtains and cabin dividers, so again the whole WTP cabin were looking at me as I awoke from a great nights sleep (not a pretty sight  Laugh out loud ), and watching as I slid my bed back up into a chair for landing.

Take off felt a little strange, as the seat isn't supporting you as much during the climb, but it didn't last long and for the rest of the flight it was fine.

Totally agree with RB211LTN. The BA J Class cabin (especially Upstairs with the flat beds) does feel special. Even in some ways more special then CX.
The rear facing take off position is not a problem, as the seats are cardled in during take off and landing. No problems what so ever. Actually it feels FUN!

I think the BA upper deck J Class (Flat beds) is even better than the QF F Class cabin on 744. (Feels more spacious) and the overhead bins have being upgraded so you can actually fit something in.

Also BA has introduced Sleeper service on selected US routes and DXB routes. You get night Cap service and Cookies + Hot Chocolate.

I heard you get a better blanket which is the only weakest point before. The red/blue woolen blanket was a bit flimpsy before. If BA can have a duvet service that will be EXCELLENT!!!

Well, I'll disagree with you CX123 on the 4 middle seats being the worst. If you are travelling with your partner, the 2 rear facing seats actually supply you with a mini oasis and I actually prefer these than sitting opposite each other on the window side.

Leezyjet, not sure how you can say the WT+ looked crammed in, the Club world & WT+ seats are identical in width... but I understand how it is a bit off putting having them staring right at you.

I have a feeling that a Dusk will welcome you on board British Airways.

It should be a sleeper seat service though I expect.

The 777 aircraft used on the LGW-IAH route have the flat beds fitted in the Club World cabin. Each bed is fully flat and offers a lot of space - I'm sure you'll be impressed when you try it.

Personally I don't find facing backwards a problem. It is an interesting sensation during takeoff, climb and landing. You might even prefer it to the usual "boring" forward facing seats! The fact you are facing backwards isn't really noticable during cruise.

Enjoy your flights.  Smile

Thank you again.
At the moment my rear facing seats are 11A (LGW-IAH) and 12A (IAH-LGW), so I'm not in position to look at people in World Traveller Plus  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I was wondering which are the differences between the Club World flat bed and the FIRST flat bed, because I had some flights in First and I know that seat. I know FIRST flat bed is 6" longer than the other one and maybe more wide...are there more differences (more soft, different cloth, other....).

Sometimes, when boarding in London, happens that some Club passengers are upgraded to FIRST, just a few minutes before the boarding of the aircraft. It happened to me one time and that was on a cradle seat Club 777, so it was a good gift from the staff of BA. Now I'm looking to upgrade the return leg from IAH to LGW to First class with my miles. I'm not interested in First Class for choosing more movies or have a better service, or have more food options, I'm just interested in having a good bed to sleep. Do you think the miles will be well spent? Or is the flat bed in Club enough?

I'd echo exactly what Leezyjet said - flew NCW for the first time in March on a 777 LGW-ATL. I was with a colleague and we had 13E&F, both facing rearwards. We could see in to the WTP cabin too - made slightly more uncomfortable by the fact that is where we should have been but were lucky enough to get an op up  Big grin

It was a great flight...and I really loved facing the 'wrong' way. We hit a bit of turbulence and it's amazing to see how much the overhead bins, etc. flex - just never seems visible when you're facing forward, but facing backwards we could see all the movement. Take-off/climb was perfectly smooth and didn't feel that odd. Landing backwards was the most fun because you couldn't get such an easy idea of when you'd hit the ground...made for a very enjoyable first NCW trip. The seats are hugely better than the old Cradle ones.

The return flight in WTP facing the 'right' way was much more boring  Smile

Firstly, ANstar those 4 in the middle seats are assigned right at the end (especially the middle 2). They are the least prefer and do look pretty tight to me. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. personally if I paid for the ticket (not free upgrade) I will never choose those. on 777, I will try and get the first row
in the 744 definitely UPPER deck.

AZA330 the BA F Class is better than Club World
(yes bigger seats and different fabric also wider and longer.

Also you get a sleep suit and duvet.

However CX is slightly better.

I mean if you use pts to upgrade that is fine. But if you pay for it and you are tight on the budget, I think Club World is a good substitute (due to the $$ you save)
