Ryan Int'l Airlines Sold To Rubloff

Sat Jun 05, 2004 2:01 pm

I just got ahold of the press release from June 2, 2004 (for anyone not copyrighted) about Ryan International, a company I used to work for. THey have been sold to Rubloff Holdings..

For Immediate Release
June 2, 2004

PRESS RELEASE

Rubloff Jet Express announced today that it purchased a majority stake in Wichita, Kansas based Ryan International Airlines, the largest U.S. charter airline. Jerry Weber, part owner of Rubloff, said, “The acquisition of Ryan is an integral part of our overall aviation strategy. Ryan is an established large aircraft air carrier with a solid Midwestern work ethic. They have a great reputation in the travel industry and will be key to our continued development of a fully integrated asset-based airline service company.”

Ron Ryan, Chairman of Ryan International, said, “We’ve been flying 757’s for Rubloff, and my management team and I felt that selling to Rubloff would be the perfect fit for the next evolution of our Company. Rubloff’s desire to invest in aircraft ownership together with our existing service business combines to create a powerful force in our industry.”
Rubloff’s parent company is a large real estate development company headquartered in Rockford, Illinois. Rubloff Development Group, Inc. is wholly owned by Ron Swenson, Jerry Weber and Bob Brownson who have owned and operated the Company since 1986. Since that time, the Company has continued the Rubloff tradition of operating a full service, diversified real estate development company which is rapidly approaching twelve million square feet of space including shopping centers, office buildings and assorted other commercial developments. This portfolio is spread throughout the Midwest in over 21 states. In addition to its commercial real estate activities, the Rubloff principals have operated a successful residential construction company which focuses on single and multifamily developments in Northern Illinois. This company operates under the name Hallmark Homes and expects to construct approximately 400 homes per year in the Chicagoland and Rockford markets.
Ryan International Airlines is a large air carrier that specializes in leisure, business and executive travel. Ryan also provides air freight services and operates five different aircraft types of transport category aircraft under its worldwide authority. Ryan is an approved carrier for the Department of Defense and recently obtained 180-minute ETOPS authority for the 757. Ryan operates for AirTran Airways, Funjet Vacations, Gold Transportation, Apple Vacations, Suntrips, TNT Vacations, Thomas Cook, Futura, Iberworld and other passenger and freight customers. It has flown various NBA and NHL teams, professional baseball teams, political candidates, entertainers and other single entity groups. Ryan has flown large jet aircraft for the United States Postal Service, Menlo Forwarding, Emery Worldwide and United Parcel Service. It has had aircraft based throughout the United States, in the United Kingdom, Spain, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas. Ryan is the largest charter operator to Cancun and flies to many other Mexican and Caribbean destinations.

Weber stated that Ryan will remain in Wichita and that while the acquisition will have no immediate effect on employment, the synergism of the two companies would result in future job creation throughout Ryan’s operations.

I state again, this is PUBLIC information and not copyrighted. That's why it is called a press release.

Interesting -- doesn't really jive with their real estate dominance in Chicago.

Out of curiosity, what is Ryan's IATA code and call sign? I tried http://www.airlinecodes.co.uk and could not find that information. I was actually wanting to know if they had a website.

Their ICAO code is RYN.
Their IATA code is 1I.

is not always accurate in their databases. I found Ryan's code under historical records, and it listed two different IATA codes, but had a link to the same website.

"Ryan is an established large aircraft air carrier with a solid Midwestern work ethic. They have a great reputation in the travel industry and will be key to our continued development of a fully integrated asset-based airline service company."

...it's unfortunate that the management team at Ryan is considered by many as one of the worst in the industry. For years Ron Ryan threatened to shut down the airline if the pilots unionized, amongst a myriad of other threats and actions against them. ALPA was voted in for good reason. Still, Ryan management continues their "snub-nosed" actions even after ALPA arrived on campus to represent the pilots. They fail to "act in good faith" on almost every aspect of negotiations with ALPA and the pilot group, who have been extremely patient...maybe too patient. It's as if Ron Ryan is saying "okay, you have a union now...I don't care...we will continue as we have been...and now you can simply deal with us at the negotiating table, that is, when we're good and ready to listen and negotiate."

"Weber stated that Ryan will remain in Wichita and that while the acquisition will have no immediate effect on employment, the synergism of the two companies would result in future job creation throughout Ryan's operations."

...hopefully, Rubloff Holdings can effect some positive change there.

Interesting. I'd never heard anything bad about Ryan. Everyone I know at FL seems to think they're all right.

Even still, if they really do have these problems, perhaps Rubloff will help fix things, as V1vRfly says.
