Any YS-11 Still In Service In Japan?

Sat Jun 05, 2004 10:19 pm

Hello,

I was just wondering if any airline still uses the NAMC YS-11 on Japanese routes, preferably out of the Tokyo or Komatsu area?

Cheers,
Tom

Japan Air Commuter (JAC) operates some YS-11's from Kagoshima. They fly mostly around Southern Japan. However, you won't have much luck getting a YS-11 from Tokyo or Komatsu.  Sad

Did any U.S. airline besides Piedmont operate the YS-11. They looked good in Piedmont colors.

Air Nippon used to fly YS-11s from Haneda to the outer islands like Oshima, but those flights have been replaced by Dash8s and/or 737s. Have been on one YS-11 flight in 2002, a very old aircraft that really need retirement.

Does Air Nippon still fly the YS-11s?

This is OT, but, SonOfACaptain.

When I was much younger, I got to ride in one of Piedmont's YS-11's. Remember it well, I picked the YS-11 flight, 2 stop service, over a non-stop to my destination. The N/S was a 737, I and had already flown in one of those. This was back in the 70's, I guess I was an a.nut before there was even an internet available to the public.  Smile

I was always under the impression that Pidemont was the only US pax carrier to fly the YS-11. But, glancing through the a.net database show several YS-11's in what appears to be pax service.

Negative FlyPIjets.

Reeve Aleutian Airways also operated the YS-11. In fact they where the only new build aircraft that the airline ever operated.

They where retired in the early 1990's and then languished in open storage for several years before they where sold off in the late 1990's before the company went under.

@ William: Thanks for the info. No prob if not out of KMQ or TYO. I just saw that there are good connections via Haneda or Itami, so I might even be able to get my first 777 flights over there. Do you have any idea how long the YS-11 will still remain in service? Maybe you also know if JAL, ANA or any of the other carriers offer something like an air pass to travel a bit in the country?

@ Off-topic: Never mind, it's interesting reading for me as well  Big grin

Air Nippon (ANK) does not fly the YS-11 anymore. They retired them less than a year ago, but I do remember seeing one of their last flights from Fukuoka (I live within an hour's commute to FUK).

JAC does still fly them, however if you want to fly on one, your BEST bet is to come down to Fukuoka and take one to Kagoshima, while they are still here. I do not know when JAC will be retiring them, but I doubt that they will get new JAL colors, and I think that they might be phased out in the near future, but I have not heard anything about them.

They're quieter than a Fokker 50 than NAL flies in here several times a day, and they have a sort of classy majestic look to them when they come in to land.

I've taken a few shots of them before here, although not airliners.net material, they are good shots with lots of detail if anyone is interested...just drop me a line.

Also, go to that planepics.com site to check out the new Jal 777-300 in Olympic colors that I took...pretty rare to see, as she's only flown on domestic hops.

JAC plans on retiring the YS-11 by FY2006. As Cessna said, Fukuoka is a good place to grab one. The airport has a wide variety of operations, including lots of widebodies and small regional planes. There is an observation deck on the domestic and international terminals.

I'm not aware of any air pass, but you can check JAL or ANA's website for some discounted domestic fares. Although not an air pass, you might be interested in a JR Rail Pass if you plan on any rail travel.
