Ohhh goodie my favourite and local airport been discussed...
Luton Airport's website is http://www.london-luton.co.uk/
Go to the drop down menu "Holiday & Flight Info" and you can select arrivals and departures information which is updated every five mins. (Also Ceefax on page 447>
The airport will never be as big or as busy as the other London airports which have the financial muscle of BAA and the goverment behind them, but LTN
puts on a fierce battle.
It handled 6.9 million passengers last year. (7th Busiest in the UK)
The main problems for LTN
is in attracting long hauls and flag carriers - is the facilities they offer. With only having 7072ft runway, no jetways and lack of airlines offering conencting flights.
There was an interesting article this month in June's addtion of Airways magazine, with a report about LTN
and they interviewed Paul Kehoe the managing director, he said they are putting plans forward to increase the runway length to 9,500ft to the easterly end and jetways are currently in the pipeline.
Paul Kehoe also went on to say that he would like to attract Transatlantic traffic once the runway extention has taken place!
He also gave hints that they are in negotiations with Ryanair to increase flights from LTN
to new destinations from the winter and Wizz Air has just annouced both their routes to Katwice and Budapest are to go double daily. Along with easyJet adding thrice daily services to Berlin, Budapest and Dortmund and Aer Arran increasing their services to an ATR 72 and going double daily to Waterford and Galway. (Have also heard rumours that Aer Arran maybe launching services to Cork).
On the other hand charter traffic at LTN
has been on a major decline for last few years with MyTravel and Thomas Cook pulling out of the airport. Britannia's summer program is alot more reduced than last year, as they use to base four 752's at the airport from May to Oct and this year is just two 752's May to Oct and another Jul-Sep. First Choice have an A320 based at the airport for most of week during the summer month's and Monarch does not offer that many charters from the airport with them mainly focusing on their scheduled services to the Iberian Peninsular.
probably has the largest available market of any of the London Airports, with a population of over 20 million being within an hour's drive of the airport, including London, South Midlands, East Anglia and East Midlands falling within this catchment area - Pitty this isn't fully utilised!
Sorry I think I have dragged on enough.
