The Last HS Trident Flight?

Sun Feb 13, 2000 11:10 am

Does anybofy happen to onow when the last scheduled passenger flight with an HS Trident happened to be? I think that Air China (formerly known as CAAC) had operated them up into the late 80's.

Also, has anybody ever flown on one?

Im not sure when the exact last Trident flight took place, but BA retired their last Tridents at the end of 1995. The Chinese Tridents were somewhat newer so it's possible they may have flown for a little longer. I don't know what happened to these once they were retired, a few did go to the Chinese Air Force.

I flew on a Trident twice. In 1973 I flew a 1C from LHR to Paris-Orly. And in 1978 on a 1E from Newcastle to LHR. I found to them to be very quiet and comfortable inside, although people on the ground would probably disagree as they were very noisy on takeoff. Hope this helps. Chris

I think Chris meant to say that the last British Airways Trident service was in nineteen EIGHTY-five. I'm afraid I don't have any info on Chinese services. A small number of BA aircraft were sold in Africa (Zaire), but these didn't operate for long as far as I know.

I'm sorry to say I only flew on one Trident (G-AVFM, LHR-AMS in April 1977). This was my first jet flight. I remember being impressed by the climb angle after take-off, but this was only relative as my earlier flights were on Viscounts and Heralds. As stated before on this forum, the Trident was nicknamed "Gripper" due to its apparent reluctance to leave the ground. And with 3 Rolls Royce Spey engines, they must have been about 50% noisier than a BAC 1.11.

Tridents With Caac

Mon Feb 14, 2000 8:29 am

CAAC Tridents frequently ran the Guangzhou(CAN)-HKG route in the eighties.
In September 1988 a Trident overan the runway at Kaitak into the nullah while landing in a rainstorm. Trident service to HKG stopped soon after that.
CAAC flew Tridents in domestic routes for a while, but for how long I don't know.

I flew in a few BEA/BA Tridents. 1985 sounds about right - they certainly went a long time ago.

Towards the end of the Tridents' BA service, I was flying 757s every time I went to London so it was quite nice to end up on one again in the mid 1980s. I liked the steep climb angle as well, especially if you sat at the back.

It also became a habit to look out for the feeling of deceleration when the smaller 4th engine of the Trident 3 was wound down after climb. Does anyone here know if it was shut down completely or left at idle during the flight?

I have a book about British Airways, and I'm 99% certain it says BA's last trident flight was on December 31 1985 flying from Manchester to London-Heathrow.

You can't really blame BA for getting rid of them, they must have sat very strangely beside the new 757s on the Shuttle routes!

I remember the CAAC crash at HKG. Does anyone remember if the aircraft was found to be at fault?

There was that tragic link between the Trident and your neck of the woods, of course.

You are right of course, the last BA Trident flight was in 1985 (not 1995) as I stated. My fingers just don't seem to want to jive with my brain! Sorry about that. Chris
