CO To Start EWR-Ponce, Puerto Rico

Sun Jun 06, 2004 9:13 am

According to Caribbean Business, Continental has signed an agreement with the Puerto Rico Toursim Company to begin a daily non-stop flight from Newark to Ponce, Puerto Rico, in December. The flight will be operated as a revenue guarantee; if it doesn't generate a minimum revenue target Puerto Rico will pay Continental USD$500,000.

Help With SSong Flight?

Sun Jun 06, 2004 9:16 am

Hopefully my hometown will soon see nonstop service to the mainland one more time. The tarmac at Mercedita looks kind of sad nowadays with only cape air flying into the airport.

I wonder how long it would take AA to add service to PSE to stay up with CO. It wouldn't surprise me to see JFK-PSE happen soon after CO makes a formal announcement for EWR-PSE.

Also, for anyone at CO, have they decided what are the flight times going to be? I would presume that they might do a RON schedule similar to BQN, but anything's possible.

This is an excellent idea as many PR people in the NYC/Northern NJ area from that area of the island - less need for someone to use a connecting flight, or take a bus or have relatives pick them up at SJU. The only problem is that this will probably be a modest money yeild flight, not much premium business (1st/Business). What equipment is proposed to be used? 757's or 737's and what versions?

The article says that a 124 seat aircraft will be used, so I would have to guess that CO plans on using a 73G to service the route.

That'll be great for the surfers on that end of the island.

CO has flown EWR-BQN with AA never adding service. Even when AA took over TWA, they closed down TWA's BQN station. AA has shown little interest in adding BQN in the past, although they are looking at MIA/SJU/JFK-BQN closely now with jetBlue (to JFK) and Pan Am (to SDQ and FLL) in the picture.

Now we just need ORD->VQS service with a 773-300.

Ironically, Eastern, Continental's sister carrier, operated from EWR to Ponce during their last months.

Even if CO starts flgihts to Ponce I doubt we will be seeing AA back in Ponce. If AA is planning to serve any other airport it wold be BQN, which is seeing more and more airlines come in.

Interesting to see a 70 x 30 miles island as Puerto Rico to have so many passenger airports, thinking about Mayaguez which has American Eagle ATRs flying there from SJU, Fajardo with its Trislanders flying to Vieques and Culebra. I guess American might jump onto Continental not by direct flights to Ponce but restarting connecting service from/to SJU with ATRs (airtime probably in the 10-15 minutes range) offering a one stop service with pricing competitive to CO.

Is the airport at Ponce the former Ramey Air force Base?

Why would someone want to take a connection in SJU over a nonstop from EWR?

Cory > Don't forget not everyone is living near EWR. For people living in say BOS or MIA or Orlando or any other place with non stop flights to SJU, there's no difference between flying BOS-SJU-PSE compared to BOS-EWR-PSE.

Not everyone lives near EWR, but there is a very large Puerto Rican population in the New York area.

The beautiful thing is, the NY/NJ metropolitan area is so populated and so diverse that flights to most destinations, especially the Caribbean, can be supported by O/D traffic alone. The connection opportunities at our EWR hub are just icing on the cake; the real money at our most profitable hub comes from travelers either originating or terminating in the New York area.

I will wager that we do not anticipate heavy connecting loads on the EWR-PSE flight, and I think the schedule will reflect that.

So what will the schedule be then? Has CO made any informal announcements to its employees about the new service?

"I wonder how long it would take AA to add service to PSE to stay up with CO."

AA at one time did fly to Aguadilla, but before CO started the route. This was the mid 1990s and AA flew from both JFK and MIA to Aguadilla, AA's competition was Carnival which flew A300s from EWR and JFK to Ponce and Aguadilla on an alternating schedule.

Another route AA flew at one time and has not brought back is JFK-Nassau.

Looks like the service will be flown with a 737-700, since the article says it will carry 124 pax.

To those who are not familiar with Ponce, it's a very beautiful city, the second largest in Puerto Rico, with a lot of history. Plus there are some interesting locations nearby like the phosphorescent bay near San German on the southwest coast.

I hope the service is successful!

cheers, Ralph

And please do not compare the market of Aguadilla with the one of Ponce since they are completely different.

The announcement of the PSE flight has not become official from Continental.
This knows only government (P.R.P.A) people, some CO employees and me because i am co ramp supervisor at BQN.

I heartily agree with you, MD80Nut - Chepos's hometown is indeed a beautiful city. The central plaza is enchanting; make sure you check out the old firehouse (you cannot miss it!). The buildings are beautiful; the side streets are interesting, too, with folk art murals and sculptures. The art museum and the music museum are well worth visiting, too. Yes, there is also the phosphorescent bay near San German (also an historic place) and the bay near Cabo Rojo and the Rio Camuy caves. Ponce would make an excellent starting point for a tour of "La Isla del Encanto." San Juan is not far, thanks to the new "autopista."

BDL-PSE might be workable, albeit possibly on a less-than-daily basis. Much of the sizeable Puerto Rican population in Connecticut comes from the Ponce region.

Fanofjets, What new "autopista"? As I recall that expressway has been there
for years. On a more related topic, why did AE leave PSE?

I wonder if this flight is going to be a daily or just 3x a week or something along those lines. I think CO can make a pretty good go of it. PSE has had a number of airlines serve it in the past, the problem being they all went out of business or just pulled out:

Eastern
Carnival
Pan Am II
American/American Eagle

And yeah that SJU-PSE expressway has been around for a couple of decades now. It's nothing new.

The old firehouse in Ponce is indeed gorgeous, the pictures I've seen don't do it justice. It's very impressive "live". I agree, Ponce is an excellent place to start a Puerto Rico vacation.

When I lived in Puerto Rico in the 60s, the drive from San Juan to Ponce was a 3 1/2 hour affair through winding 2 lane roads in the mountains. Beautiful, but long and ponderous. The autopista or expressway actually opened after we moved away and it cut the drive to about an hour and a half or so.

I still have friends on the island so I go back whenever I can. I'll be going down again around Labor Day in early September. I can't wait!

cheers, Ralph
