If it was a missed approach, than the gear would have been up as you say it was. Gear goes up right away, since it is a lot of drag otherwise.
I see you say you were 6 miles from the airport. Here at PHL
during heavy traffic periods ATC usually ask traffic to hold 180 KIAS until 5 DME
. Therefore, I have seen some aircraft keep the gear up a little longer to hold that higher airspeed, before slowing back. Just another possible explenation if it wasn't a missed approach.
Now that I think about it, 6 miles would be pretty far out to be iniating a missed approach. There's still a lot of space left to fix anything that might be wrong.
