JetsGo Aborts Landing At FLL?

Sun Jun 06, 2004 10:04 am

around 12:30pm, driving down Griffin Road, around 6 miles from FLL, I saw and heard a jetsGo (presumably flight 802) climb and turn away from the airport. I did not see any landing gear down, which is not normal around 6 miles out. Also, it seemed like the arrival pattern was normal. Can anyone confirm the abort and if so, can you give a reason?

What happening with JetsGo was abort landing and is that something wrong with their aircraft today?

I saw and heard a jetsGo climb and turn away from the airport.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but perhaps it was taking off?

"Aborted Landings" or missed approaches are not uncommon by any stretch. They occur every day at many major airports, along with an assortment of other fun maneuvers such as S-Turns and whatnot. Ask anyone from PHL (like PHLapproach up there) about the fun stuff we saw at PHL on 5-23.

To put it in perspective, I'm a student pilot of barely 50 hours and I've performed 2 go-arounds due to other traffic on the runway. This is at a Class D airport with no scheduled service at all.

B747-437:
I saw it on the approch path, but it did look and sound like taking off....nonetheless, it was going towards the airport.

I understand that these missed approaches are common, but what I thought was odd about it is that the gear was not down at all. It would normally have been down at that time.

Joe: Your story reminds me of a friend of mine. Came in from DFW around 1am at FLL and had to go around! Don't know why, but it wasn't mechanical!

If it was a missed approach, than the gear would have been up as you say it was. Gear goes up right away, since it is a lot of drag otherwise.

I see you say you were 6 miles from the airport. Here at PHL during heavy traffic periods ATC usually ask traffic to hold 180 KIAS until 5 DME. Therefore, I have seen some aircraft keep the gear up a little longer to hold that higher airspeed, before slowing back. Just another possible explenation if it wasn't a missed approach.

Now that I think about it, 6 miles would be pretty far out to be iniating a missed approach. There's still a lot of space left to fix anything that might be wrong.

Sigh,

I remembered during my first solo I was doing my second loop. I was about to land and had clearance when i noticed that the SOB in front of me decided he was going to take his sweet time getting off the runway. The tower did not seem to notice so I initiated a go-around on my own...

You were doing aerobatics on your first solo? Wow! Were you looping deliberately or was it unintentional?  Smile

Saw an interesting abort just after dusk at YVR once.

A 747 (I believe) was lined-up for takeoff on the south runway to the west but not rolling yet when a small twin turboprop came in from the east to land on the same runway. Don't know how or who made the decision and/or mistake, but the turboprop veered off rather late to the north. I'm sure the turboprop could have landed safely as it would have touched down well past the jet but obviously not proper procedure.

What for? It only seems to be A.net members who are wetting themselves over a routine go-around.  Insane
