Japan Airlines Tri-Jets

Sun Jun 06, 2004 9:40 pm

Hi.
Have just joined and this is my first post on the board, so nice to 'meet' you all.
Does anyone know when JL's tri-jets are due from removal of service?
I really want to try and grab a flight on one before they go.
I heard it was 2005, but now someone mentioned 2006-7.
Anyone know a definite time-span for this?
Thanks!

Thai744,

Do you mean the JAL DC-10 or MD11 ?

According to JAL's website, it says the DC-10's will be retired by FY2006, and the MD-11's will be retired this year.

At the Moment Jal is operating a DC-10 out of Fukuoka-Honolulu, and Fukuoka-Hong Kong routes.

You've gotta love that the DC-10 is outliving the MD-11.
If you need someone to blame / throw a rock in the air / you'll hit someone guilty

Why would they keep the DC10s longer than the MD11's?
DC10's being an older aircraft would be more expensive to maintain surely?

Thai744,

I think that JAL has probely sold their MD-11's to a Cargo Airline.

The story of JAL retiring the MD-11's before the DC-10's is almost a perfect analogy for the parent outliving its ofspring. Truly sad in my opinion, but hey Thai744 means you have some time to hop on the dissappearing Diesel10's and by the way, welcome to our family.
