US: New Erie-PHL/CLT Service

Mon Jun 07, 2004 7:50 am

Another sign of the times at Pittsburgh. US Airways is adding non-stops between Erie, Penn. and both Philadelphia and Charlotte:

One of my freinds who lives near ERI will be VERY happy. ERI already has RJ to CVG from DL and DTW I think. well ERI ALREADY has jet service to PIT. So thats why they added PHL and CLT.

Something tells me with the rash of new service to PHL and/or CLT to many of these PIT outstations, that these cities will lose service to PIT when US drops their hub service at PIT this fall.

well ERI ALREADY has jet service to PIT. So thats why they added PHL and CLT.

The reason for the new PHL-ERI and CLT-ERI service is because PIT-ERI service will most likely not be along much longer. As it becomes a focus city, PIT will see minimal service to a handful of destinations. Some regional RJ routes with high O&D, and then the mainline jets to California, Florida, and probably Cancun (and maybe Frankfurt).

Why would PIT have service to FRA? If PIT-FRA never happenned when PIT was a hub, it certainly isn't going to work with PIT as a focus city. International facilities are far superior and (especially in the case of CLT) way below capacity at the two real hubs.

On a more on-topic note, when is the Concourse E expansion at CLT going to happen? I would imagine that we are going to see more service similar to this ERI service when PIT gets de-hubbed, and E is already pretty chaotic.

Cubsrule: US currently flies PIT-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA to benefit from its Star partner, Lufthansa. That would be one of the main reasons why PIT-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA could potentially stay.

Less to do with Lufthansa, and more to do with the fact that PIT-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA is subsidized. The German company Siemens subsidizes the route because they carry a lot of O&D traffic between PIT and AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA. The subsidies guarantee the flights profitability, and is also why the flight is an A330. Assuming Siemens still wants to pay those subsidies (I see no reason why not, because, as I said, they use the flight for O&D), there is no reason for US Airways to drop it.

The route is also heavily subsidized by Bayer.

I remember when US would fly many daily flights from Erie to Pittsburgh using the F100 and DC-9.

The Big question that hasn't been asked as of yet is; how much will the fares be? Something tells me that US' recent Go Fares program will not apply for PHL-ERI and/or CLT-ERI flights.

I remember a few months ago when my boss was booking round-trip business travel to ERI from PHL on US (it included a connection in PIT). The total airfare was an outrageous $900... for coach.

While non-stop PHL-ERI service could benefit my company (we have a satellite office in Erie), those fares have to come down for us to utilize the service more.

Wow...never thought I'd see a post on this board about my old home-town airport! I can remember Sunday morning visits when my dad and I watched DC-3s, Convairs and Martins belonging to Lake Central, Mohawk, Capitol and Allegheny flying into and out of ERI. Such fond memories!! As was mentioned in another post, it seems the high fares on ERI flights motivates one to land in PIT, BUF or CLE, rent a car, and drive the short distance to Erie as I, sadly, have had to do many times...

I think this is only the beginning as US starts to downsize PIT and protect its high fare routes.

One tidbit mentioned later in the press release is that ERI's service to PIT is being halved from eight daily flights (6 Saab/2 CRJ) to four (3 Saab/1 CRJ). That's clearly the first phase of the eventual elimination of ERI-PIT flying on US. I speculate that when hub operations at PIT end in September/October, the Saab flights on Shuttle America to PIT will end, and ERI will likely pick up an additional CRJ to either CLT or PHL. Capacity each way is going to go (temporarily) from 280 seats to 390 seats with the schedule announced in the press release; if my hunch is correct, capacity will end up at 300 seats each way (or 250 if they don't add another CRJ to either PHL or CLT).

It's kind of sad when you consider that ERI used to have multiple daily mainline flights to and from PIT.

GoFares to ERI? Eventually. The pilots and management meet in a few weeks to discuss details of the reorganization plan, and I would assume a rollout schedule for GoFares will be announced. We'll have to wait and see, but the company continues to stress it will go system wide as the fare structure must come down to reduce costs.

Why would the pilots have anything to do with what the passengers they are flying are paying?  Confused
