ZAS Air (Egypt)

Mon Jun 07, 2004 7:52 pm

There was an airline by this name , I think the acronym stood for Zackarias ... something, they had an A300 and even served Karachi for a brief period in the early 90's under the failed open skies treaty to encourage airlines to use the then new Jinnah Terminal, the airline was labelled "scavenger" along with some other African carriers who started operating between the Gulf and Karachi stealing passengers from Emirates and PIA. Are they still around?
.....up there with the best!

Airmale

They ceased ops back in the mid 90s.

Can't remember the exact year, I'll check it out later and post an update, unless someone else can confirm when.

As well as the A300, they operated DC-9-3o, MD-83 and B707. They ordered, but never received, MD-11s.

The 707s could be seen on both passenger and cargo flights.

ZAS were often to be seen in the UK as they flew many ACMI subcharters for UK charter airlines in the late 80s

Certainly flew domestic flights in Egypt too

I don't like signatures...

They flew almost daily to AMS. I recall them flying CAI-KWI-MLE once-weekly. Can't remember the other destinations.

They used to have service on the 707 done in the states. They would fly through LAS with regular frequency. I used to help with the ground handling of the 707's when they come around. Always alot of mystery and always security guards on board with guns.

As far as I know, the A300's came from Conair (with the paint being a hybrid of some sorts). I think there's a few pics in the database from that period.

I flew with the airline once (I can't remember much) back in the early 90s on one of their A300s between LGW and CAI.

They operated quite a diverse fleet

If I remember well, ZAS stands for Zarkani Airline System. The started flying cargo a/c with fruit/vegetables and later on they also carried pax. Remember they had an md80 flight operating into BRU

The owner of the airline (Mr. Zakarni) had a Dutch connection (his wife was Dutch if I'm correct), hence the reason why they flew to AMS. Their 707 was parked for many years next to a KLM maintenance hangar at AMS after the demise

The last A300 in Zas colours is stored at Paris Orly. There are pictures in the database of it.

One of their A300s is also in storage at CAI (along with a few other aircraft)

From "Airlines Remembered" by BI Hengi:

(paraphrasing)

ZAS was founded by Emir Zarkani in 1981, flying freight. Operations started November 23, 1982 on LON-AMS-CAI. In Autumn 1987, they gained liscence for passenger charters, at first for Hajj flights. This was then broadened allowing services to Western Europe. 707s were used, initally on Luxor-Bordeaux. Scheduled domestic flights began in 1988. MD-83s and MD-87s, A300s, and A310s were also leased in. With the collapse of Egyptian tourism spurred by the Gulf War, mounting business difficulties led to to a shutdown in April 1995.
