Gabon: 30 Killed In Hawker Siddeley 748 Crash

Tue Jun 08, 2004 8:31 pm

This morning, a Hawker Siddeley 748 operated by Gabon Express crashed into the ocean about 100 meters from the shore in Gabon's Capital, Libreville shortly after taking off from Leon Mba airport.

30 are reported dead but at least six people were rescued from the wreck by small boats which arrived at the area soon after the crash.

Hate to hear one of the few "Budgies" still operating has gone down. I love this type, although the cabin noise is bad. Have flown in and out of bush airfields on 748's serving fishing camps in northern Canada.

A sad & tragic loss of life.

A great airline, too. One of few pax operators of the H.S.748, and I believe the last pax operator of the Caravelle. Have the Caravelles all been retired now, can anyone tell me???

According to this DUTCH news site http://nu.nl/news.jsp?n=336495&c=20 Dutch, French and German people were probably on board.
There also saying that at least 9 people have been saved and are now in the hospital.

Gabon Express, featured in a flight video showing the HS 748 and the Caravelle was owned and operated by Bob Sobek, a great pilot who flew anything with wings. Hope he was not involved in this sad event. They offered a package to tourists to fly on their "classic" aircraft so that could explain the number of foreigners. Gabon Express was indeed famous for operating the last Caravelle in passenger service (3D-SEP). It's now re-registered SA)">3C-SEP, returned to the lease company and was last seen for maintenance at the Germiston airport (SA). Sad to say it's likely going to end up being yet another white tail freighter dodging arms embargoes in Africa.

I always find it incredible when people survive water ditching! At least there were some survivors! That is something to be thankful for.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I believe this aircraft may have featured in one of Just Planes Videos productions, along with the CRV. They only had one 748.

Gabon Express operated 1 HS-748 TR-LFW which is the aircraft that crashed as it was the only one they had. The aircraft featured in the Just Planes video was one of their two Andover's with registration 3C-KKP which was recently scrapped at Leon M'Ba. They currently operate a Fokker 27 and a YS-11.

There were also two Lebanese on board. One of them was killed the other survived the crash.

Condolences to all involved to this crash.

Seem like the plane was made in 1967.
