New Int'l Airlines To PHL?

Wed Jun 09, 2004 4:41 am

Can we expect to see any new international airlines to PHL anytime soon due to Philly's new international terminal? I'd like to see Swissair, Alitalia, or SAS there.

Isn't that new int'l terminal primarily for US? ??

The new Terminal A-West was built primarily for US Airways' International Operations. At present, all other international carriers arrive at A-East (the original international terminal).

While I personally haven't heard anything yet about other international carriers checking out PHL, I am almost certain that given US' current situation that DOA Director Charles Isdell has probably planning efforts to court additional carriers (including international) to PHL.

Should US shut down operations (not to be a gloom and doomer here), the newly-opened Terminal A-West (and its 13 gates) would be practically vacant.

This was just talked about. I couldn't locate the thread though. If US goes under, which I myself still doubt. But If so for sure some new Intl carriers would scoop up A-West. Possibly even a move of BA and AF over to A-West. As they have been the first Intl carriers to serve PHL and have been here for quite some time. I would like to see a daily VS 744 or an A346 (ehh forget about the A346. It would never happen). I would also love to see an IB 742, I saw one on approach for 12 last summer at MIA and I'm in love with them. The other I would love to see run a daily is KE or JAL. It's tied, I don't think that would ever happen either. Nope, no way.

I'll have to ask my ATC friend from PHL. He's my friends next door neighbor. He should know what's going on.

I wouldn't hold my breathe for Swissair, since they are no longer around.

If you see an Asian carrier, it would be ANA. Thier new 7E7s are the right fit to open up PHL-NRT flights. I can seriously see this happening in the future. As for European airlines, the most realistic option is seeing Aer Lingus, who as shown interest in PHL. Though as long as US Airways is flying PHL-SNN and PHL-DUB, I don't see it working.

US' entry into Star might be cause for some new service to come to PHL. PHL is US' tansatlantic hub, so SK, LH, , and OS all might be possibilities. All of those except LO, though, already serve IAD and US flies to FRA and MUC. Only time will tell...

Yes, as MAH4546 mentioned. Aer Lingus has shown quite a bit interest towards PHL. Yet, since US does a killer job on the SNN and DUB routes. I don't see that happening until (if) they go under.

Referring to what Cubsrule said, FYI: LH already has a daily F R A flight. And I don't see them bringing in another flight.

I sure hope some more Intl carriers come in, I'm hoping real bad. I should be thankful that we atleast have a daily LH, AF, two BA flights and a countless number of US Intl flights. More than many other people's home airports get. It's just you get sick of it, and I'm to that point  Sad.

PHLappriach- I was actually thinking that LH might start a MUC flight as they did in CLT to compliment the existing service. Though US flies this route already, they each have a daily flight to that other German airport and since that other German airport is having some trouble making its expansion happen, MUC is becoming more important to LH.

Would AZ ever fit in PHL? Especially with the large Italian-American population in Philly, would it not make sense to have their flag carrier present?

Yes, it's still there. The building, for the most part, is either abandonned or sparcely used although there are a few planes parked there overnight... usually HP, UA, CO, and an occasional NW.

PHLBOS, actually BA is the only international that doesn't use A-West. LH has been parking there for quite a while what with the STAR codeshare and all. AF has been arriving there and discharging before being towed down to E for departure.

Now that BA has that whole end of A-East to itself, it would be nice to fill those empty gates with some more airlines.

Wagz,

I stand corrected... up to a point.

According to the latest PHL timetable, (which covers April 2004 through June 2004, subject to change of course) the terminal listings for JM, LH, U5, and even BA are A-East. However, each listing has an asterisk next to it stating, 'A-West for International Arrivals'. AF, as you correctly stated, also uses A-West for International Arrivals but uses E for departures.

In a nutshell, the ticketing, check-in counters for the above-carriers use their respective terminals (A-East, E for AF) but use A-West for International arrivals. The reasoning for this is, no doubt, to have everyone arriving go through Customs at one common area. Having toured A-West while it was still under construction, I observed that the Customs area is fairly massive.

If BA is still using A-East for arrivals, maybe arriving passengers are either being directed through glass dividers to the new Customs area or they're directed to the old Customs area.

US Airways flies PHL-MUC daily. There is no need for a second daily service on the route.

Large diasporas don't make a flight profitable or fill it up. That is one very small fraction of the equation. Alitalia uses thier long-haul fleet to the maximum, and there are far too many other long-haul destinations they would be better off with, such as Los Angeles, Montreal, or Hong Kong.

I never even thought about it but I know 6 people alone that are going to visit family in Italy this summer. They'll just have to make the commute up to EWR - JFK. Great point AVPOH77, That would be a very reasonable Intl carrier to PHL. Better yet, SA should start some service because of our high population of African-Americans. Nah, not many people can afford a 1500 dollar or so airfare.

LH need a MUC service from PHL.

There is not enough capacity on the daily B767, plus our company don't get a discount on that flight and US Airways charges too much. There are days when we could half fill the business class cabin with our employees.

i would love to see more carries at PHL like AZ, EI and others...especially asian carries.

there was a rumor at one time pre 9/11 that KE was interested in PHL...but obviously it never came to fruition.

also, i heard EI did want to come to PHL but was denied or something and elected to go to BWI. is this true?? did anybody else hear that??

i hope that the administration at PHL tries to attract more carries to the airport and if US does survive...which i hope they do....some of the star alliance members come to PHL. I would not mind seeing VARIG or SAA.
