AA To Chihuahua, Mexico In October

Wed Jun 09, 2004 9:34 am

American Airlines' Mexico push keeps growing. Chihuahua, Mexico will be thier 12th Mexican destination, with daily ERJ-145 service from Dallas starting 1 October 2004 pending goverment approval. It is the 4th Mexican destination launched in 2004. IIRC, this will be AA's second time on the route.

Docket:
http://dms.dot.gov/search/document.cfm?documentid=283355&docketid=18042

Also look for Miami-Cozumel service to re-launch in early 2005 if rumours become reality. It was suspended in mid-1999.

I really hope Mexican carriers step up to the challenge of catching up in serving these markets... Whereas it is true the wheels are turning towards increasing/opening long haul routes, new destinations in other continents )(somebody has been listening Big grin)... It is also true that in the meantime, many local folks are left to fly in foreign carriers only...

So much to do, so little time, so scarce the money...

The thing about these routes is that the US carriers can offer feed on one end (the US end), while the Mexican carriers can offer very little feed on either end, unless it is AM flying to a DL hub or MX flying to an AA hub.

Exactly. Aerolitoral (AM's regional) could provide the same CUU-DFW service with ERJ-145's, feeding to/from SkyTeam's (DL) hub there. Statistically speaking, they've got the same chances as AA for grabbing passengers in the Chihuahua market.

Thi means only one thing: while there are people in one airline's planning departments getting their heads together in multiple projects, there are others who don't.

Such is free market. Let's se how AA does in this new route.

True, AeroLitoral could provide the same flight with the same equipment but losing money on the route. DL has been reducing the DFW hub in the last years and there are not that many connections possible compared to AA, so I don't think AeroLitoral could be profitable. Additionally, if you consider that AM and CO have a codeshare agreement and that CO serves CUU from their IAH hub, I don't think there is much more market. AA and CO flights from CUU are targeted to business people since people from Chihuahua prefer to drive to ELP and take a cheaper flight from there...

AeroLitoral needs either a big hub in one end of the route or a decent O&D traffic with people willing to pay the high fares. AeroLitoral does not have any of these. If AeroLitoral wants a new market from CUU, then they should try to fly CUU-ATL if the ERJ has the capability...

I think 5D its more worried competing against mexican carriers than international carriers. For instance, I've heard rumors of 5D starting a route to DFW from MTY with EMB145 (perhaps, because of Aviacsa's, the've also shown interest on that route) but Aerolitoral doesn't even codeshare with AA. So whats the deal of attemping entering DFW instead of ATL or perhaps flying CUU-ATL or HMO-ATL?

Back to the topic, is this a new route from AA or the're just resuming service? Back 9/11th they flew this route right? Or am I confusing it with the DFW-HMO?

Rojo: << True, AeroLitoral could provide the same flight with the same equipment but losing money on the route. DL has been reducing the DFW hub in the last years and there are not that many connections possible compared to AA, so I don't think AeroLitoral could be profitable. >>

Interesting statement. DL operates 262 daily flights out of DFW to 75 destinations (Albeit I reckon only two of them are international: MeX and INC (3x week))... Do you really think there are not enough passengers in these 262 cycles (528 flights) to fill one E145 roundtrip beyond break-even point?

I assume AA has got more flights and connections than these, but still, you've got to be kidding this is not enough for a lousy E145...

The foregoing, notwithstanding the fact (to which I concur), that a CUU-ATL flight using the E145 would be very interesting... Albeit I've flown Delta Connection's CRJ flight MTY-ATL, and swore to the Olympus never to do that again: more than an hour inside such a bird is a claustrophobic experience unless you have got two seats for yourself. In this case, MTY-ATL is blocked at 02:45... How long would be a CUU-ATL flight?

Let's see what happens. I really hope one day a MX A318 makes a daily CUU-DFW route, codesharing with AASmile/happy/getting dizzy

Yo Quero More Room Throughout Coach.

I don't think that will happen in the Chihuahua route dude. ERJs, 757s and A300s which are widely used in AA's Mexico service do not feature MRTC.  Sad

Friendly correction, it is "Quiero" instead of "Quero"  Big grin

I think the 262 daily flights DL has at DFW are not enough to fill an AeroLitoral ERJ145 to/from CUU with AA and CO in the market. If you look carefully at the 262 flights you will find that most of them are flown by Delta Connection Carriers (ASA, Comair and SkyWest) using Regional Jets which concentrate in cities close to DFW. CO's great majority of passengers from CUU go to important cities in the US and to international destinations (Europe, Canada, Latin America, etc), so DL destinations from DFW are destination not very popular for CUU passengers. There might be some destinations which could attract passengers, but there are not enough to compete with CO and AA. Additionally, you have to consider that the 262 flights are split into banks, so a single daily flight will be good to connect passengers to one or maybe two banks (if you time the flight for an early departure from CUU and a late departure from DFW), otherwise, passengers will be better on AA and CO with a through connection meaning less time in the airport (after all, the flights are targeted to business passengers). And if you add to this, the international connections AA and CO have from DFW and IAH, there is no way to compete...

DL's mainline destinations from DFW are: ATL, SEA, SFO, LAS, LAX, SAN, SLC, ABQ, BOS, LGA, CVG, FLL, TPA, JAX, and PBI and they use three banks for most of these flights (except ATL which has 12-14 daily flights, CVG which has 5-6 daily flights)... For cities like IAH, they have 8 daily flights using regional jets and so on...

I think that AeroLitoral can use its ERJ more profitable in other destinations and stay away from CUU, since they will have to compete with AA and CO in CUU and with many US carriers in ELP...

Bravo to AA for once again expanding southward from DFW and MIA. AA, unlike many other legacy carriers, is actively pursuing its niche in the marketplace and realize clearly that they have to in order to separate themselves from LCCs.

Will AA operate to the new Queretaro airport? I know CO will.

They would be stupid to not try it eventually.

God Bless AA!!!

I have been searching for cheap tickets for early July from DFW to CUU, and the most direct flight is with CO via IAH @ over $600 R/T. Ridiculously expensive! It is cheaper to fly to Europe in the Fall than to CUU at any time!!!. I still will travel but will have to do it via ELP and then cross the border and take a bus. The fares right now to ELP are less than $200 R/T and have many more choices in flight times.

I am glad to hear that soon I will be able to travel non-stop and perhaps at a cheaper fare.

I will look forward to book a ticket on the inaugural flight in October.

Jose
