SQ is ALWAYS more profitable than EK before SARS. Until now, SQ is still a richer airline and has an advantage over EK. I hope they stay competitive and remain as a no 1 first class airline.

In my opinion,

I have doubts about DXB being a megahub anytime soon. As bad as it may sound, most Americans, along with many other westerners, if they had a choice would choose to not fly through a middle eastern airport, no matter how nice it may be or how friendly the people are. I know it sounds stereotypical and stupid, but i do think that it holds true in some circumstances.

SQ linking east and west with leadership flights driving pax through SIN can only help. The Singapore Stopover deal is a good one, and i hope it grows.

I would vote HKG as the regions next major hub, as you are really in the middle of everything. SIN is nice, few hours to dehli, few hours to perth, hour to KL, 6 hours to tokyo, etc. The preformance of the national carriers, such as Singapore air, thai, cathay, ana / jal etc will determine the real preformance of the airports. If an airline has great service at the right price with a good network of routes they will succeed.

It will be all about wooing customers, offering deals, nice seats, etc. I think SQ is on the way with exec economy. If they could lower their prices a bit and not be so by the book all the time i think they have a real good chance of emerging as the asian airline of choice for a lot of people.

Time will tell mis amigos.

HKG is ALREADY a major hub. And HKG has MORE flights than SIN. Also our airport is bigger. We are just trying to make our hub bigger.

SIN will remain as a hub still of course

Well it sounded like the article was talking about who is going to emerge as the mega hub of Asia, sin, bkk, hkg?

I guess if i really had to vote, i would say none of them. No airport in the US has emerged as the MEGA HUB of all air travel. LAX is big, so is JFK. ORD is big, so is IAD. No single airport is going to rule all of Asia. I do think the continued success of all of them is going to be the national airlines that use them as hubs. If they do well, the airport will see much traffic. I am not trying to encite a "HKG is better than SIN" or any crap like that, I am just saying national carriers dominate at most asian hubs, gains or losses in national carriers will be reflected on the airport traffic and city traffic as a whole.

With continued unrest, warfare et al in the Middle East, I'd rather omit it from my itinerary when flying to Europe from Asia/Pacific on business.

I know most of you would laugh, but if India ever got serious, I believe IT would be a very profitable and big hub for east-west travel.

But, alas, will the famous Indian bureaucracy ever get its act together?

Anyway, just thinking out loud!

Is there any chance of EK beginning a NRT-DXB service?

Your reply #8:

I agree entirely with your sentiment, especially since the sub-continent has the world's largest middle class population as well as a superior socio-politico-geographic position in the world compared with DXB and SIN.

Well maybe not socio-politico over SIN, but they should work on it eh?!

one thing SQ/SIN provides extensively while EK/DXB can't do is routes from australasia to north asia, personally i prefer EK slightly over SQ, but the fact is that it just makes no sense for me to fly MEL-PVG via DXB, altough theoritically i can. but EK is sort of using SIN as a hub which is good to see

Asia will always be a multi-hub continent. The sheer size and makeup of the continent will ensure that.

Besides SIN, HKG, BKK being discussed, I am certain that Seoul - Incheon aspire to be a hub. Others that could include Beijing, Shanghai, maybe Guangzhou.

Reply 11: "it just makes no sense for me to fly MEL-PVG via DXB"

If EK should one day fly DXB-SIN-PVG, you could actually fly MEL-SIN-PVG all on EK's services  Smile

Its probably SQ and SIA at the moment but I'm sure it won't be too long before before EK and DXB become the number one carrier.

Emirates all the way!

They are unable to get the relevent slots at Tokyo, and hence the reason they already started flights to Osaka.

According to a CNN story, Changi is already no. 4 hub in Asia-Pac by passenger vols after Tokyo, HK and Bangkok.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TRAVEL/01/19/biz.trav.changi.rivalry.reut/

It is this that is causing some concern in Singapore since they fear that Changi will become less attractive over time as other airports become bigger with more flights connecting.

SQ is more competitive I am sure and is likely to win over EK. At least SQ has more awards.

No 4 only??? I thought BKK has less passengers

SIN and HKG are still quite attractive fro transit and stopovers. they are in really good lcations as well. i don't think BKK will do as well as SIN and HKG cuz TG is not strong enough at the moment. For the story of PVG and PEK, it would be miles to go since there is not any strong airlines based there.

This reminds me of the Boeing vs Airbus war: Dubai is a newcomer and because of that is has great advatadge over Singapore. Like empires, dominant airports change and sooner or later SIA/Singapore will not stop rulling and loose predominance...so sooner or later Dubai will be the most important airport for that region and be there for 15 to 20 years...after that, who knows...

I think Cathay have seen what Emirates and SQ have achieved over the years and with the 'new' airport in Hong Kong Cx can finally spreads it's wings and become a proper hub airport. We are shortly going to grow the fleet to 100 aircraft and we are entering a rapid expansion phase....well, rapid for Cx standards!

I doubt Dubai will EVER overtake Singapore as a hub. Dubai lacks FAR behind now.

And of course HKG will remain as the 2nd largest if not the largest hub. Afterall its growing now.

How many aircraft does CX plan to have in 10 years time?

If I have to compare SQ and EK as a hub, the main advantage SQ has is its location, for example if one is in Australia and heading to Asia then no-one would ever choose to fly on EK only if they have a lot of time to bludge. Heading to Europe or Middle East, passengers would then choose to fly on either airlines, depending on their will.

In terms of service, both airlines offer "1st class" service which is recognized throughout the world.

To ensure SQ maintaining it's "hub" position there's one thing that it has to do which EK has been aggressively doing - Expand its network. SQ has suspended so many destinations in the past (Recently Las Vegas, Brussels, Chicago etc, further Darwin, Cairns, Vienna, Abu Dhabi etc). Yes, understandable why they're doing this and also relying more on Code-share services but to expand its own would always be better instead of relying on others.

Have heard pretty bad comments on EK from my friends but I'd love to try them out one day. However, doesn't look like I'd be heading to Europe anytime for now!

If you define "largest hub" as the airport which handles the most passengers, in Asia and the Middle East, SIN is now actualy fifth behind HND (63.2m), BKK (30.2m), HKG (26.8m) and NRT (26.5m). It's sixth if you include SYD as being part of Asia (24.7m, all figures from ACI). I'm not sure how the numbers pan out if you count transit passengers only (SYD would fall way off as it's mainly a "destination" airport rather than an international transit airport).

I don't know what SIN can really do about it...SQ remains a first-class carrier but that doesn't necessarily mean it can grow at the same rate as other mainline carriers in the region (EK, MH, Thai), especially if it has to continue to fend off the growing number of LCC in the region.

Cheers

HKG can handle 45 million passengers after the expansion in 2000. Eventually around 80-100 million according to the Hong Kong Airport Authority.

Isn't SIN a bigger Airport than SYD????

Thought SIN has more passengers than SYD.

But I am sure HKG is the 2nd largest hub in Asia after NRT.
