PDX-NRT On NWA

Thu Jun 10, 2004 12:46 am

Tomorrow NWA begins service between PDX and NRT. The flight is on a DC-10. The first arrival from NRT is on 6/11. The first departure to NRT is on 6/10. My question is how does the DC-10 get to PDX if it isn't coming from NRT. Where does the plane come from and what time will it arrive? I hope someone out there knows this information.

It is not going as a sub for a regular flight, I know that. I bet it will come as a shuttle flight from SEA, I would say either late tonight to early am it will come ( 12 midnight- 6 am)

Thats cool and Im glad you asked this question. I would of never thought of it coming from SEA. I would of guessed it to come from MSP. But it kinda makes since to come from SEA.

OK SEA makes sense and so does using the DC10 that arrives SEA around 0600 from OGG to go down to PDX for the 1st flight to NRT. So my guess is this DC10 will make it's way down to PDX from SEA between 0700-1100am.

So where does the 753 that is replacing the DC10 on the SEA-OGG route come from?

Surely this route will be primarily for leisure passengers and so yields will be quite low? What about cargo?

Pe@rson: I think it will be the other way around. There's a lot of businesses in Oregon and SW Washington that used the DL flight, and will use this one once it starts. While businesses have strong ties to Europe, hence the LH flight, their ties to Asia are even stronger.

True, there will be leisure pax, but I would say predominately business. Cargo should do well also. NW, from my understanding, wants at least 20% cargo on each int'l. flight...a NW person can confirm that.

My question is how does the DC-10 get to PDX if it isn't coming from NRT.

Just a wild guess here, but I'm thinking it's going to fly.  Big thumbs up

Airlines are often "Ferry" their a/c from one station to another without any passengers. This usually is done by using weird flight #, such as 8595 etc.. They do not necessarily have to have passengers in order to fly the a/c.

How do you think new A330 a/c get to MSP from France? The same principle applies.

Has NW ever served KUL or CGK? If so, when and was it non-stop or direct?

NW served KUL prior to the Asia Economy crisis for a couple of year. Also it had planned to serve CGK but it never did fly to CGK although tickets were already sold to the destination. I believe they rerouted those who bought the CGK tickets onto GA's flights.

KUL was served out of KIX.

Ah thanks, SEA. Do you know the frequency, the loads, yields and profits (if any)? What about cargo on the route?

It will come from SEA. It leaves OGG tonight at 2045 arrives SEA at 0515 on the morning of the 10th. It will be cleaned and offloaded then flown down to PDX for the 1350 flight to NRT. So I assume it would leave SEA by 0700 and arrive PDX by 0745, give or take a few minutes. Of course actual NWA employees would know the answer to this one.

I hope the weather is better in PDX than it is here in SEA. Thick, ugly drizzle and low ceilings.

ClickHappy..I was able to witness the arrival flight from Seattle and the DC-10 is painted in the new color scheme...It looks really great parked on D-15 at the end of concourse D..Runway 28 right was very busy this morning for some strange reason. I wonder if they are doing construction on one of the taxiways on the southside...I sure hope this Tokyo flight will be a sucess for Northwest and Portland...

What runway does it look like the NWA flight will use. 28L or 10R?

Here's a suprise. KGW hasn't even spoken about NW's new service on they're website at all today. I've become more and more disapointed in KGW's coverage of events around the state of Oregon over the last year. This is no different. Maybe they'll give the event 2 minutes on the news tonight.... Pissed

S12PPL: I think It is very common, when it comes to airlines' event that no news about NW is worth mentioning but when it's all about AA or UA, they'd jump on it like no tomorrow.

Well, not the best beginning for NW's new PDX-NRT service - the inaugural flight has been delayed 1.5 hours due to "non-scheduled maintenance", according to nwa.com.

The flight finally left gate D15 at 3:31pm PDT, and is estimated to arrive Narita at 5:51pm, just over 1.5 hours behind schedule.

Yep, but it's not just aviation stuff with KGW. They dont' cover ANYTHING not relating to Portland. THey didnt' even send a camera crew to the OSAA state championships for baseball this last saturday, and West Albany was in it for the first time since the 50's!!!

Yeah, I was out there watching. After pushing back, the crew asked for a few extra minutes for a maintenace issue. After about ten more minutes, the ATC asked how much more time they would need. There was no reply that I heard. Then after about ten more minutes the crew called and said they would need to go back to the gate.
The trip out there was a bust for me. I had taken a late lunch to watch the takeoff, but had to get back after I knew the delay would be long. RATS!

I've got Titanic hopes and they aren't sinking
