IB A319s At MIA Last Sunday?

Fri Jun 11, 2004 3:50 am

Hi everyone,

I was flying from MIA to BOS last Sunday (trip report is coming up!) and I'm pretty sure
I saw two IB A319s taking off one after the other, two to three minutes apart.
I didn't have a great view from where I was seating and I only got a glimpse of them
(so I could be wrong!). Can anyone explain this? Have I gone totally mad?  Nuts
Or were they being ferried?

Thanks,

Tony

It's been a while since this has been brought up.

Iberia has a hub in Miami, the only foreign airline to have a hub on US soild. They have a fleet of 4 A319s flying between Miami and Cancun and Central America.

Interestingly I asked Iberia recently if the new A.319’s (msn 2264 08/04, 2311 10/04 & 2365 12/04) would be shipped out to Miami as well and the response was: ‘The mini hub will be kept at Miami, but will not expand”

Which I think means no!

As MAH4546 said, it's Iberia's mini-hub in Miami, the A319s are used to connect with their A340s and 747s to Spain. Before the A319s they used MD87s for the Cancun and Central America flights.

Relax, you haven't gone mad!  Smile

Yea the 319's are a daily thing down here with several flights to leaving to points in Central America and Cancun as stated before...

Just for kicks: Air France flies an A320 and on certain days an ERJ145 for their MIA-PAP route.

Wasn't there talks several months ago or maybe even a year ago about possibley moving the mini hub to another destination? I believe the problem they were having was due to the security wait times and processing and all..I thought they were considering other airports such as FLL and CUN. Anyone know what i'm talking about?

Yes, there was. It would not have moved to FLL, though. The problem was US security issues, which FLL also has. They were looking at CUN, SDQ, and HAV mainly, though, once again (they were considering this back in early 2002 as well), Iberia came to the conclusion MIA is still the only profitable place to run thier hub from. It's not moving.

I believe IB had considered moving the hub to HAV due to its strategic location and relative proximity to MIA. Also as a side note IB did indeed operate MD-87's and DC-9's for these connecting routes.

Wow..it sure has been a while since the HUB topic has come up! LOL But dont worry Tony...as others have said, you have not gone mad. To bad you didnt see the other two take off...you would have really gone mad then! LOL

There is still talks regarding moving the HUB to Central America due to the rules that TSA and Immigration have put in after 9/11. It is just a big hassle for the transit passengers and they are not happy with the procedures implemented.

The main problem with moving the HUB to Central America would not be the feeder traffic...as that would improve, but IB also makes money on the local traffic boarding in Miami to Central America(5th freedom rights). That local traffic wouldnt be sustained from lets say SJU or SDQ or HAV hence a huge loss in revenue. At times the local MIA traffic accounts for more than 50% of the passengers.

We'll see how it evolves.

767-332ER: No the only reason IB was thinking about moving the hub was because of US security reasons. How passengers just connecting in US needed a US Visa. MIA is the only spot they can run a profitble hub in North America
