Egyptair Start CAI-Paphos Flights

Fri Jun 11, 2004 7:50 pm

Egyptair has taken-over Helios Airways 2x weekly (both on Thursday) flights. Helios have been operating the flights on a continous basis since the airline launched services. Currently Helios is going through expansion (including starting LHR services) so Egyptair has taken over the route until Helios get more aircraft to take over the route again. MS is using their A320s on all flights (Helios used B738s)

Eurocypria already has 4x weekly B738 flights on the route.

That is an interesting Route!
Why not going into LCA??

Off course PFO is a nice area, will there be mainly Egyptian Leisure or Business travelers on this Route?

Or maybe more pax from PFO?

Ams,

The CAI-LCA is a very profitable one where both Egyptair and Cyprus Airways. Egyptair have 5x weekly flights on the route (one via Sharm El Sheikh which is very popular with the Cypriots) and Cyprus have 3x weekly flights. Even though frequencies are not high that flights are very lucrative. Air Malta has recently been granted rights to operate on the route with 5th freedom rights.

As for the Paphos route it targets Cypriots visiting Egypt on daily (yes daily) and weekly visits and more recently Egyptian tourists visiting the beautiful city of Paphos. Eyrocypria flights are used more by the business community as they are scheduled services.

The Paphos route has expanded quite a lot. Just 2 years ago there was only a weekly flight (by Helios B734). The Egyptian-Cyprus market has grown by 38% this year (according to Al-Ahram newspaper) and hopefully expansion will continue.

i remember when i was diverted to paphos back in 1994, there was NOTHING there. Paphos has grown a lot, so has Cyprus. In 1991 when I lived there to 2003 when i visited again i saw that there was a lot of change. Cyprus has become EXTREMELY popular with eastern europeans for example.

horus can you compare Sharm el sheikh or hurghada to paphos area? which one is better?

People going to paphos are basically only able to access paphos with ease.

To go to Limassol, Nicosia, Agia Napa, Protaras and a lot of other resorts Larnaca is closer.

Horus,

Will they be codesharing the flight or is MS completely taking over the flight?

Pardon my ignorance, but where is Paphos? Is it a city on the island of Cyprus? Tourist resort? Haven't heard of it.

HALFA,

Paphos is at the left bottom corner of cyprus. Its probably one of their biggest tourist resorts. I would think the #1 resort would be limassol, but I'm not 100% sure.

try going to the amathus hotel website and search for the paphos amathus hotel.

AirxLiban,

Thank you! I did a search and found the hotel and it looks very nice. I noticed the room packages at the hotel are priced in Cypriot Pounds. Isn't Cyprus part of the EU now, and finally, are they independent from Greece? Again, excuse my ignorance but they didn't teach us Cypriot history in our schools here in Hawaii.  Smile

Not really, because the flights are targeting Cypriots visiting Cairo on a full day visit. The first flight departs and arrives at CAI early in the morning bringing in the holidaymakers and businessmen, and then late in the evening their is a another round trip taking them back home. This has proved very popular but more and more holidaymakers are staying for a week in Egypt.

It is a lot of people in Cyprus with money and in Egypt to. The route looks strange for a lot of us but is has more potential than we think

That is very true

horus can you compare Sharm el sheikh or hurghada to paphos area? which one is better?

Well it depends how you look at it. Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are holiday resorts (the actual Sharm El Sheikh town is a 20 minute drive from the resort). Paphos is a city. So it depends what you're comparing.

Will they be codesharing the flight or is MS completely taking over the flight?

From what I can find, the answer is no they will not c/s. I don't know how long MS will keep operating on the route. Schedules show the flight is operating for 2 months. I don't know whether Helios will re-start the route soon, or whether MS will extend the operating period.

Isn't Cyprus part of the EU now, and finally, are they independent from Greece

Yes Cyprus is a part of the EU and is an independant state. The country is split north and south. The Greeks are in the south and the Turks in the north.

Horus,

I was thinking in terms of a resort. I haven't been to either, but I hear that sharm el sheikh is good for scuba.

Airxliban, I've been two both places. I've been to Sharm El Sheikh a few times and to Agia Napa, Cyprus back in 2000.

If you want my honest opinion I would say Sharm El Sheikh is by far better and I swear this nothing to do with the fact I'm half Egyptian. Sharm El Sheikh is truly an amazing places and all my friends who have been there said they would love to return again.

Sharm (short for Sharm El Sheikh) offers so much to a holidaymakers and is developing and expanding at an amazing rate. Sharm is most famous for its scuba diving experience. It was recently compared with the Great Barrier Reef in Oz, so that should be an indication of how good this place really is. The beaches are so gorgeous. The sand is golden and the water is so clean and pure. You have every possible water sport available (and believe me you have to try them ALL out). There are world-class official diving centres that train people how to dive, so that you can make the most out of your experience.

As for accommodation the hotels there are just amazing. They are all at least 4 start hotels and there is a 6 star hotel too. There are shopping malls, cinemas, clubs, restaurants, cafes (including Hard Rock Cafe), and many other facilities that make it an amazing stay.

The nightlife is also fantastic, and the resort seems to be alive 24 hours a day. There are quite a few clubs around that suite different tastes in music from RnB to Trance.

For the more adventurous person, just outside the resort their are quad biking expeditions into the local desert and mountains (which I can only say is a must do). They have recently start absailing and skydiving.

I can go on and on because there is so much to tell, but that was just a taster.

As for Agia Napa, the only thing they have over Sharm is the fact that since it's more of a clubbing resort, you'll have a greater choice of clubs. But apart from that I think Sharm is by far more superior (even with the Europeans) by Cyprus is still an mazing place too.

Hey, just found out Helios Airways re-started services back to CAI today!

What makes it better this time is the fact that both flights are scheduled - ZU750 (previously it was a regular charter service). Both flights will be using B738s

In addition to that MS will continue with their flights until September 30th.

I guess traffic was much better than expected.

So now Egyptair, Helios Airways and Eurocypria all have scheduled and charter services on the Cairo-Paphos route.
