777 In The Skies For 10 Years!

Sat Jun 12, 2004 10:12 pm

Happy Birthday Boeing 777!  Smile

.... wait a minute wasn't there another thread??...

Yes, but how could you guys forget that today is already the 10th anniversary of this flying beauty?
Boeing 777 made its first flight on June 12, 1994 which is exactly 10 years ago! So let's really make this the 777 week in honor of this great and beautiful plane that has definately enriched aviation in the past and hopefully as well in future.
I've flown 777 twice and enjoyed every minute. Too bad Lufthansa didn't buy'em.  Sad

Happy Birthday Triple 7/ T7/ 777! Well she's not officially 10 yrs old until 11:45am, on this day ten years ago WA001 departed Boeing field at 11:45am reached FL190 during the 3 hr 48 minute flight. Notably in October of 1994 the 777 was testing the Vmu speeds and into November the brake test we're well underway. "The ultimate test involved WA001 accelerating down the Edwards main 15,000 foot (4,575m) runway at more than 200mph with engines set at 88,000 pounds (391kN) thrust. The engines were suddenly throttled back and the aircraft, ballasted to it's maximum takeoff weight of 632,500 pounds (287,150kg), was braked to an emergency stop. The brakes, which were purposely worn to the point of replacement, stopped the aircraft in 1,400ft less than expected. The aircraft then sat with brakes glowing orangy-red for five minutes to simulate the time taken for airport fire crews to reach it."

I still enjoy watching that series on Discovery Wings about the design and testing of the 777.

Alan Mulally should be the top man at Boeing Group, as he believes in his products and has the charisma which Condit totally lacked

@FlyingBronco:
Because that thread said 8 years of 777 and refers to the first delivery of the aircraft.

I wonder when Boeing will offer a freighter variant, if ever?

It would be a nice fit into the slot that the MD-11F occupies. Lufthansa recently stated that they would have been in the market for some new MD-11F aircraft if the line was still open.

The 777F would be attractive as a long range, efficient cargo hauler.

How many crashes and fatalities has the 777 had?

The 777 (touch wood) has had ZERO crashes and ZERO fatalities. It's even beaten the 744 (China Airlines spoiled its first decade with the HKG incident).

Beautiful, powerful beast of a plane. Flown on F-GSPE & F-GSPC with AF on the EZE-CDG-EZE route, plus BA's G-VIIF from CDG-LHR and G-YMMF & YMMB EZE-LHR-EZE. On the EZE route, due to lower cruising speed and lesser range, the 772ER took close to 2 hours more than the 744 (13h45 vs. 11h55). BA has since added the fuel stop at GRU, which adds ANOTHER 2 hours! As a result, I've stopped taking the 777 from/to EZE.

May it continue its crash-free existence!

Great plane, I have flown a 777 3 times and loved every minute of it. Hope to see many more years of this wonderful aircraft.

Cheers...

Oh yes it definitely is a great airplane to fly on. Very modern, interiors looking very attractive, powerful at take off...I've flown on a few of them with American. I enjoyed every flight on it. American has good IFE program on the 777, it includes a moving map display. I first flew on a 777 back in 1999 when American had just begun taking delivery of those, on a domestic flight from DFW to ORD.
Happy anniversary 777 !  Smile
