CO And Their A340s

Mon Jun 14, 2004 8:13 am

I have had this on my mind for a great amount of time.

A few years ago (5 or 6) I had purchased a Continental Airlines A340 by Schabak. My question is: Considering this is a very accurate company and they wouldn't produce aircraft "that don't exist"; Did CO ever have interest in purchasing any A340s or is this just a fluke?

I believe CO was going to purchase the A340 but then backed out at the last second and went with Boeing on the 772. I am glad things went the way they did. BTW, good job on securing that model, it is tough to come by these days!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hope that helps!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

They already had decided on the A340.

Bethune came in and went all-Boeing/McDD

Yes, Continental actually did placed an order for 7 A340-311s. 3 of the birds were built, then Bethue came on board, cancelled them & the planes were sold and delivered elsewhere. If you can find A340 line numbers 24, 35 & 37, those were the CO's birds. The last 4 were never assembled. Regards.

I believe the same thing happened for NW, which ordered the A340.

Schabak made models of an NW A333 in the old colors, way before NW received their first new colored A333.

On the contrary, Schabak makes some of the worse and nonexistent models!

Buy GeminiJets, Herpa, or Starjets for better quality stuff!

Here's a funny thing, I also have a Kuwait 777-300 1/600 Schabak model, so I wouldn't use Schabak as a reference to what type of aircraft an airline uses. Although as already mentioned, CO did at one time have an order for A340's pre-Bethune.

Skywestfan,
I like Schabaak too, but they do occasionally like to make models when orders are placed and before they are actually delivered, or make other errors. The Continental A340 that you mentioned is one. A few others that I have or that you can/could order are/were:

TWA A-330 - order, I think of 20, was cancelled

Cathay Pacific A-330 - they operate it, but this model was only sold in the old CP paint scheme that was never painted on a 330.

KLM 747-300F - Titles say "Taking Things Furhter"

Saudia 777-200 - Offered in old color scheme.

I still like Schabaak and the others as well though...or basically anything with airplanes!

LOL! That's a good one!  Big thumbs up I have been a Schabak collector since the late 1980's and have come cross a wide range of inaccuracies this company has produced. Iowa744fan has already listed a few of them, but this is only the tip of an iceberg.

SAS Cargo B737-600 anyone? Big grin

I have quite a few Schabak models too, and yes, they have quite a few models that never did exist in real life.

There are also a few more that I can't think of at the moment.

Some information on the 340's that were not delivered to CO.

Line Number Registration
24 F-WWJO, D-AIGB (Lufthansa)
35 F-WWJV, D-AIGF (Lufthansa)
37 F-WWKE, F-GMDB, OO-SFN (Brussels)

I am not sure who the FF registrations belong to, perhaps it is a Airbuss test, or delivery registration.

All the F-WW registrations are test registrations used by Airbus. Also, OO-SFN is an A330, not an A340, and was originally delivered to Air Inter, before going to Sabena, and later SN Brussels.

I swear I saw an A340 in CO new colors a few years back on one of the magazines, probably Airliners. Was that an actual photo or one of those altered pictures? It seemed too real to be altered though..

I have that CO A340 model too! I keep it here at my desk at work to play with whenever things get stressful (it's joined by a Virgin A340, Eastern L-1011, United 747-400, United 767-200, Boeing 757-200, Concorde, and Delta MD-80).

While in CUN last week, at one of the shopping malls, I saw a CO 747 SP in the current CO color scheme. Obviously CO doesn't operate any 747 SP's, and haven't in that c/s, but does CO Micronesia?

I own a Wooster Continental 767-300. Ordered, but never delivered to CO.

I know PAC-MIN makes models for the manufacturers so the brass at the airlines can see what their livery would look like on an aircraft they may be considering purchasing. PAC-MIN's are beautiful, but expensive!

I recall seeing a PAC-MIN Continental MD-11 that some lucky devil got a hold of.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

I also have a CO 767-300...don't remember the model company, but I bought it about 8-9 years ago at our company store (when we were McDonnell Douglas and could get logo models...unlike now, just the Boeing colors for all model types).

I have two 772 COs by Herpa in 1:400
Two in 1:400 by GJ

I also collect 1:500 where there is another 772 and another which is the Peter Max version.

On their current schedule:

DXB-IAH: 772 1:400
DXB-EWR: 772 1:400
DXB-IAH: 772 1:400
DXB-EWR: 772 1:400
DXB-IAH: 772 1:500 Peter Max
DXB-EWR: 772 1:500

I know the range might a little out of reach for the 772ER but it is a fantasy fleet after all Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Starting to look like DA.C around here with all of this model talk. Indeed Schabak is by and far the worse diecast airliner model maker in existence to date. I primarily collect Aeroclassics (#1, imo), SMA and Gemini Jets, no plastic wings in my collection.

Some made a comment that Airbus actually had 3 CO A340s produced and ready to fly. If that is the case, I am curious if there are any photos of these birds? This somewhat reminds me of the elusive Braniff "Big Pickle" 741 photos of this undelivered green a/c which have yet to materialize.
