Gerard J. Arpey, Chairman and CEO of AMR Corporation today was elected to lead the board of the Air Transport Association of America, Inc. (ATA). He will serve a two-year term as Chairman and lead the board's administrative committee. He also will direct ATA President and CEO James C. May in managing ATA's efforts to implement policy set by the board.
Arpey was elected chairman of AMR Corporation and American Airlines, Inc. in May 2004. He has been president and CEO of AMR and American Airlines since April 2003. Previously, he served as president and COO. He joined American Airlines in 1982. Arpey is responsible for driving American's turnaround since 2002.
"ATA and our member airlines would like to thank outgoing board chairman Richard Anderson of Northwest Airlines, who served an extended term that encompassed the events of 9/11 and ATA's own restructuring in 2003. He did a marvelous job under the most difficult circumstances imaginable," said Mr. May. "At the same time, we look forward to the dynamic leadership and guidance that Gerard Arpey will provide the organization and the industry."
