CX Back In Zurich?

Mon Jun 14, 2004 8:51 pm

Does someone know if Cathay will come back to Zurich? All mayor Asian airlines come to Zurich, except Cathay?!

I wonder if you also put Asiana, Air China, Garuda, Vietnam Airlines etc. into the category major Asian carriers.

I don't think CX will come back to ZRH in the near future. They even closed their office in ZRH several month ago.

I don't think CX will fly to ZRH in the near future. Maybe if Swiss dissapears from the HKG route, but otherwise...  Wink/being sarcastic

ZRH is too expensive (taxes) for CX... That is why they closed it down. Don't think that they'll be back in the near future.

I don't think the taxes are the reason... i still think CX will return one day, cause the LX ZRH-HKG is doing very well with load factors

Perhaps CX should consider flying to GVA instead (where some of the traffic from ZRH originates anyway). This would offer an attractive alternative out of GVA. With its numerous international institutions and HQs, GVA has a potential that has been neglected by Swiss(air) for a number of years and that others may wish to tap into.

Nope, ZRH is indeed too expensive. There just isn't enough traffic to justify CX going back there. The crewing and ops would be a huge expense that CX will no longer be able to justify in today's climate.

GVA is even more of a pipe dream.

ZRH-HKG is a lucrative market, because on these longhaul flights there are not only people from ZRH area but also from BSL and BRN etc.

Take the economical power of the "magic triangle" (ZRH,BSL,BRN) and you have one of the most powerful economical areas in the world, with strong links to the Asian markets.

There should definitely be more than one carrier operating on ZRH-HGK.

CX doesn't need to operate it, they cooperate with LX on the route.

I remember reading (back in 2002) that Zurich only get three daily 744 flights. Besides SQ, who else uses the jumbo to ZRH?

Not too sure if there is enough demand for that flight. No offence but Switzerland is a small country

At the moment, Cathay are desperate for more crew and more aircraft and when we get those, there are going to be much more important places to put the aircraft on rather than a potentially loss-making ZRH flight. We need to go double daily SFO, triple daily LAX, maybe double daily to AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and CDG. The development team constantly look at new destinations and ZRH is one they will definately be looking at, but I highly doubt it is a priority.

GKirk
If your theory with a"small country" would be correct. I wonder how to explain, that TG and SQ both have daily operations into Switzerland. During Summer even JL has daily ops. Other carriers flying into ZRH are UL (5 weekly), MH (3 weekly). Till now, we only have been speaking of carriers from the far east.
There are different reasons. One would be, that Swiss people travel quite a lot. It is an important market place and it would be ideally located as a transit point as the country is in the middle of Europe.

oh yes, you have to put Vietnam Airlines in there, my basic rule of thumb is if they have consistent international routes between continents, with a good mix of long range aircraft, like the 777, then they should be put into that category....orient thai, has 747's but right now is just operating within asia.

dear swissgabe, believe me, we really wonder too why TG and SQ and even JL, are operating with the 747, as they fly more or less empty most of the time...

I thought SQ had quite good loads ex ZRH... I might be wrong though.

Actually, ZRH is a bit of a funny market for SQ. There is a fair bit of higher yielding premium traffic, and in order to cater for these folks, SQ made ZRH daily when it was in the Global Excellence alliance with SR. However, with this extra capacity came new seats to fill, and SQ had to drop prices pretty drastically to get bums on seats. So, their traffic is a mix of very high yielding traffic and people who purchased tickets at rock bottom prices.

What about belly cargo? Freight does certainly help to achieve a good result on these flights.

B747-operators to ZRH are:
SQ: daily
JAL: daily during summer, mix of MD11/B744/B772 (starting this summer)
TG: daily, Mix of MD11/B744
KE: 3-weekly, mix of A332/B744

Just for clarification, Asian carriers at ZRH are:
- Emirates (Daily, A332)
- Malaysian (3-weekly, B772)
- Singapore (daily, B744)
- SriLankan (5-weekly, A332/A343)
- Japan Airlines (daily during summer, MD11/B744/B772 starting this summer)
- Korean (3-weekly, A332)
- Qatar (1-weekly, A320)
- Royal Jordanian (2-weekly, A320)
- Thai (daily, MD11/B744)

Hope, I didn't forget any  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Supersonic78, if you're gonna make statements like

i really want to know where you got the information from, that the LX route to HKG does well ??? for several weeks now they are not able to fill the half of the A340 ?!?!?!?!

may I suggest that you get your homework done first? I opened my CRS and picked a random Swiss flight on the Hongkong route this week, and here's what it shows:

HKG ZRH 18/2325 19/0610 LX139 F0 A0 J1 C0 D0 I0 Y3 B3 H0 K0 M0 L0 V0 SC NC QC OC [343]

Doesn't look like half empty to me. As a matter of fact, it pretty much looks like that flights will go out 100% full.

Here's another one:

believe me, we really wonder too why TG and SQ and even JL, are operating with the 747, as they fly more or less empty most of the time

And just a couple of random 'half empty' flights later this week:

SIN ZRH 18/2345 19/0630 SQ346 F1 P1 A1 C0 Z0 J0 D0 S0 Y2 E2 B2 M2 W2 H2 Q2 N2 V2 L0 K0

BKK ZRH 18/0030 18/0710 TG970 F0 A0 P0 C0 D0 J0 Z0 Y0 B0 M0 H0 Q0 T0 K0 S0 V0 W0 [744]

So, if youre gonna make statements like that, please back them up with facts and leave the hearsay as well as your own wishes out of it. There's plenty of professionals on this forum who will give you a hard time over statements like yours.

I'm convinced that respectable airlines like SQ employ plenty of people who are far better placed than you to determine whether their daily Zurich run still makes commercial sense, so unless you're sitting on relevant information, please refrain from making comments like the ones above because they fly in the face of the reality out there.

Supersonic78/HB-IWC
well, having poor loads during MAY/begin of JUN is nothing unusual at ZRH. during end of JUN/JUL/AUG, even SQ, TG and JL are FULL. We should not compare low- with high-season flights.

Gerardo,
just a small correction: QR will operate 319LR and not 320.

To go back to the topic question: CX will not be serving ZRH in the near future, i.e. the next 5 years. Even though CX is doing well with cargo (their off-line cargo office dispatches an average of 15 trucks to Frankfurt, CDG and BRU), passenger flights will not come back. The way they've left ZRH in 2001 was an unpleasant one (for both the staff and the market). The not-loosing-face-mentality is also a key player and should not be underestimated.

Why doesn't JAL fly to ZRH, I think that would be a good route, they have sooooo many 747's to use. I think JAL would also be considered a major asian carrier.

Cheers...
