737 Off Runway At PIT

Looks like a 737 flying CLT-PIT hit an owl and lost control upon arrival in Pittsburgh. There's a picture inside that article.

I didn't know we had owls around here.  Confused

This is very lucky and none of injuries onboard with US Airways today. It is seen everything is good.

Thankfully there were no injuries. Is this a regular flight for USAirways? The article said this happened at 3:20am.

Yes. The flight was running several hours late. Flight 1076 is scheduled to arrive around 11:30 PM.

Why did they have to wait that long for their baggage???

They probably had to wait until the 737 was pulled out of the mud and the baggage could be unloaded.

I just checked the Flifo for this flight, sounds like it was a bad day at US Airways!

They had a flight return to stand at ORD, due mechanical, it eventually left a couple of hours late and was due to go to Tampa via Pittsburgh. A replacement aircraft was provided in PIT to avoid delaying all those passengers. The replacement aircraft was diverted from TPA to MCO due weather, and eventually arrived in TPA 4hrs 55mins late. It then flew TPA-CLT making up some time enroute, then flew the TPA-PIT flight making up almost an hour in lost time, presumably due to fairly empty skies.

At least it got out of ORD before the complete groundstop on eastbound flights around 5pm!!!

What runway was this on? If it was landing on 17/35 I could understand but its not like 9L/27R and 9R/27L are really short.

I think you got your numbers wrong, none of those exist at PIT. I'm assuming you meant 14/32 and 10L/28R and 10R/28L.

As for the arriving runway, I'm not sure.

It happened on 10L according to the news broadcast linked above. The runways you were referring to are at PHL. Also, this didn't have anything to do with runway length, the plane just veered off of the side.

So if it was a turkey instead of an owl, who gets to keep it? I hope someone notified USAirways catering, turkey dinner for the evening meal.

N670UW, I read it was 28R. And the bird appears to be a turkey/hawk kind. And yes, it has been removed.

It may have been. I was just taking that from the poster above that said it was 10L.

According to the news story on the website, the plane was landing on 10L at PIT. When it touched down, the owl hit the nose gear and snapped a control cord on the wheel, causing the pilots to lose control while landing.

It sounds somewhat funny "hit an owl which disabled a system..."
Did the Owl get into the flight deck and pull some switches?

Good to hear nothing serious happened though!

the aircraft was landing west to east so it landed 10L. but the incident happened 34 up the runway which is why its has been referred to as 28R same runway just the eastern half of the runway
