MLB Team Charters

Tue Jun 15, 2004 7:17 am

Now that we are in the middle of the Major League Baseball Season, I was just wondering does anyone know what different planes and airlines all the teams use? Also, is Newark where all the charters come into to play the Mets and Yankees? Because I know that is where the Colorado Rockies landed when they came to play the Yanks and Mets. Thank you for your replies.

Why wouldn't they use LGA for playing the Mets? It's right next door.

Dl generally uses 737-800 but of course it's what ever the team wants. I know we carry the Giants and the Expos, not sure of the others.
It's amazing the massive amounts of food they board for these flight. Shrimp, steak, hamburgers, fresh fruit, candy bars, dove bars, gatorade.... Always look forward to them coming in after a charter. Big grin

MLB Teams that play the Yankees use both EWR and LGA, teams playing the Mets almost always use LGA. One exception is LGA has a midnight to 0500 Construction curfew every summer from around June 1st to late October and this sometime effects a teams departure airport after a night game. Recently these two 727's spent several days at LGA while the Texas Rangers played the Yankees and the Florida Marlins (who normally fly Miami Air) played the Mets !

By the way the Yankees themselves fly CO out of both LGA and JFK.

I hope this helped a little ?

I know the KC Royals use a Midwest Airlines 717 for all of their charters.

The Twins use Champion Air 727's. Several years ago I was waiting at LGA for my NW flight to MSP and one of the Delta gates displayed a 4 digit flight number that said the destination was St. Hubert, Quebec. The plane at the gate was a Delta Shuttle 727. I knew that the Expos had just wrapped up a series with the Mets and the gate agent told me it was indeed the Expos charter back to Montreal. Of course the buses pulled up directly to the aircraft so the players could avoid walking throught the terminal like us peons!

wow...I cannot believe you Delta people did not catch the obvious:
DL flies the Braves!

They also fly the Red Sox and I think the Cubs.
Do they fly the Reds?
I think CO flies Huston and Cleveland and NW flies Minnesota and Detroit and maybe Seattle.

Does anyone know who the Phillies use? I think they may have used USAir/USAirways in the past, but if anyone knows what they use now, it would be appreciated.

Correction on the Royals Charter, they utilize Midwest Airlines MD-81. As expected Milwaukee Brewers also use YX along with the Cubs (if they can get Sammy's ego through the door).

Delta does the Red Sox, Braves, Reds, Angels, Dodgers, Giants, Expos, Pirates, Devil Rays and Mets. Six of those teams traveled today.

I don't know if they still fly with America West, but at the 2001 World Series they were flying them. They also left out of Long Beach, instead of Orange County.
I don't know which airline the A's use, does anyone know?

Also, do teams fly into Oakland or SFO. I would suspect that most teams leave from Oakland, but most teams have their hotels in San Francisco. Ofcourse OAK is actually closer to downtown San Francisco than SFO.

The 737-800 has to be the ideal plane, good range, not too big not too small....

GO RED SOX!!!! Big thumbs up

Hmm, i wonder why these Teams do not use their 'home' airlines. i.e. Cubs with United, Rockies with United, Yankees With JetBlue, MEts with CO,twins with midwest airlines, brewers with midwest express, detroit tigers with Chrysler aviation, Toronto bluejays with Air Canada, Rangers with CO, Atlanta Braves with DL, Diamondbacks with America West/Southwest, phillies with US Air, Mariners with Alaska Air!!!!

Hey, why didn't the airlines (expect America West) think about supporting their home teams?? Would'nt that bring in loyal team fans???
Now you're really flying

Hmm, i wonder why these Teams do not use their 'home' airlines"

In most cases they have. There tends to be reliability issues that effect the team staying with that airline. In most cases these charter flights are scheduled at god awful hours and teams don't appreciate having to wait for a plane at 2am after a 3 or 4 game series especially when looking at a 5 hour cross country flight. They go with which airline treats them the best, offers the best perks and most importantly has the least amount of problems.

Also, do teams fly into Oakland or SFO.

For A's games they fly to OAK for Giants games they fly to SFO. The Giants use SFO as well. BUR tends to be used for Dodgers. BFI for Seattle games. PIE for Devil Rays. There's several others I can't think of right now.

I think CO flies Huston and Cleveland

Delta does a lot of the Indians charters although I don't think they are exclusively doing them.

My question regarding the charter use of commercial airliners for MLB teams is this...and if someone has any sound info, it would be greatly appreciated as I am a marketing major. Do the teams pay for the use of the aircraft/crews/etc or os it a trade-off for advertising...i.e. we will fly you anywhere you want to go if we get X amount of banners in the ballpark at Y spot or is it an actual monetary transaction? It seems that a sponsorship would be in the better interest of both parties, as it is both expensive to charter an airliner for those kinds of time periods (and schedule restrictions) and it is (possibly) equally expensive to have that airline banner displayed prominently so when the camera pans out from the batter you see it (i.e. Continental Airlines at Minute Maid Park...) Just food for thought, though I am really enjoying seeing what teams fly what airlines and considering the possible reasons why...

MEts with CO

I thought Delta Airlines was the stronghold at La Guardia which is right next to Shea.

Red Sox are not completely with DL 737-800s...sometimes, when they go to New York, they will charter an Amtrak Acela trainset...they did that once last year...

The A's have a private plane that is in VIP config (don't know the exact type). Earlier this year, Keith Foulke was complaining about how he thought Delta's 737s were very uncomfortable as a player, even if they did get the whole bench. He said that in Oakland, they had a VIP config for all their flights which made it a lot more comfortable...Of course, the Boston sports media ripped into Foulke for this one...
