T1 @ JFK Evacuated Due To Bomb Threat

Wed Jun 16, 2004 5:35 am

Just advised all passengers of T1 (LH, AF, AM, SQ, CA, AZ, OS, JL, OA, AT, TK) at JFK are outside on roadways and lawns due to a bomb threat... no further word or sources to cite.

Even had passengers on the ramp. It was odd watching them being guarded by Port PD.

It was not a bomb threat. Apparently a bag was tested for explosive residue and came back positive. The owner of the bag could not be found. It was later found that the pax who the bag belonged to had left on a flight to Paris the night before(with AF I assume) and had left that bag behind by accident. The pax is a construction worker which would explain the explosives residue. Once that was sorted out, T1 reopened.

Very cool... at least those residue testing machines actually work. I always had doubts.

Let's hope it wasn't just some Corsican cheese ! Of course the machines must have been tested thoroughly, but do they have any kind of margin for error ? I'm just wondering whether false positives might register.
