Delta's Pre 9-11 Practice Of Taxiing W Door Open

Wed Jun 16, 2004 11:48 am

Pretty self explanatory topic but why did Delta, the only airline that I know of that did such a thing, taxi with the cockpit door wide open. I noticed this on many Delta flights that I took. I was even on a TPA-ATL flight where the cockpit door was open during cruise for about 10-15 mins. Just seemed like a strange practice to me, yet it was cool because you could see everything going on during taxi.

NW did this as well, and also kept the curtain b/w 1st and coach open. I remember NW F/A's mentioning that they did this for "safety reasons." My guess is that NW, and probably DL, thought that if a problem arose in the cabin, the F/A's would have quick access to the pilots.

Interesting how things reverse themselves.

Do any airlines even have curtains between classes now?

I know UA didnt when I flew them this spring.

I used to see it done all the time on DL...open till right before you get on the runway....easier for crew comm, and to pass paperwork through at the gate and while taxiing...was nice to see their engine start procedures.

As for the door being open in cruise...probably because people just plain forgot. Remember, those doors were thin as paper...people knew it before 9/11, and knew they were more of a "privacy" thing than an actual security measure.

"The cockpit, what is it?" "It's the little room in the front of the plane where the pilot sits, but that's not importan

CO now has curtains again between classes. The new curtains though are made of a mesh type material that can be seen through where as the old style curtains where solid fabric. In my opinion it is nicer than the rope that they used to use that gave the feeling that they were holding the cattle back in the pen.

Back on an American flight from DFW-CUN the pilots left the cockpit door wide open until about 10 seconds before advancing power for takeoff.

I flew on Alitalia between Brussels and Rome and they had the door open during the flight... It was an A320.

I remember ValuJet doing this as well. I could see out the cockpit window from my seat, right up until we turned onto the active runway for take off.

The only times I've noticed this happening was on DC9/MD80 aircraft..I
saw it happen on Texas International, Continental, Frontier (MD80) and
Delta (MD80). Never saw it happen on any other aircraft.

I was on a CO flight back from ORD to EWR on Sunday, they pulled the curtain across and put the rope across.

I presumed the reason for the rope was to stop cattle class passengers using the snob class bathrooms!

a little off the subject but when i flew CAPE Air from TPA-RSW last year the pilot had the cockpit window open while taxiing and did not close it until right before take off..he then opened it again once landing at RSW...is there a certain reason for that?

Alaska did this as well. I was fortunate enough pre-9/11 to be flying SFO-PDX, and while the F/A's were doing the safety brief, I was watching the pilots going through they're check list. I could even hear what they were saying, since my seat was that close. The F/A's closed the door, however, soon after they're safety brief. I did think it was cool, though, to see them run down they're check list  Smile

7E7,
The open window is for fresh air. It is nice to have that breeze coming through while taxiing, then close it right before takeoff since the air will start moving around once again when the aircraft is airbone.

I was on a Alitalia MD-80 from Milan to Catania in May 2002 and they had the door open until we turned on the runway to take off.

on the subject of the curtains between first/coach....I thought they were removed as there had to be a clear view of the cockpit door throughout the length of the airplane (narrow bodies) Anyone know if this is right?

Are cockpit doors closed manually or electrically?

Sorry, I don't get it; what is wrong with the curtains? Why some airlines are removing them from classes division?
LA still use them in every plane I've board after 9/11 (340, 737 and 767)
