The flight is on a 737-800, and is currently 100% full.

Well the flight is very busy, but not 100% full in coach, it`s about 80 - 85% full in coach and window seats are available upfront in coach. The elite seating area is pretty much empty. Just ask for a window seat when you check in and they will seat you there if one is available.

Your figures are wrong, the flight is actually oversold by 9 seats in coach, and has a few empties up in F. Not sure where you're looking, but it is not accurate. If you are looking at the online seat sources, they only show assigned seats, not sold seats, so they are very innaccurate.

Interesting...SABRE shows:

A7 D7 Z7 F7 Y4 H4 K4 N4 B0 V0 U0 Q0 I0 S0

So they are still selling a reasonable number of seats (N isn't all that expensive), so they must be expect significant no-shows if the flight is already overbooked by 9 in coach.

So thats why It wouldn't choose seats online because the plane is oversold and there aren't any open seats?

Sabre tends to be miles away from accurate more times than not. The only reliable source is the Continental Employee Intranet, and generally this information will not be shared by me or anyone else unless it is redundant information.

Well, the truth is that all (or almost all) airlines which pre-assign seats generally leave a good number of seats open until the day of the flight in order to accomodate elites or full-fare passengers booking at the last minute. CO especially with its EliteAccess guarantees of a window or aisle seat for full-fare passengers would want to leave some desirable seats open. Certain seats (for example, bulkheads near the front) are also held for passengers who might need a bit of assistance.

If you were a OnePass Elite you'd probably be able to reserve a seat but since you're not, you can't.
