Air New Zealand Starts SFO In 2 Weeks

Thu Jun 17, 2004 2:29 am

Anyone from NZ know what the loads are looking like?

Any of the local spotters going to be out there?

RE: Air New Zealand Starts SFO In 2 Weeks

I asked to go up to SFO for the inaugural flight and, surprisingly, my boss said yes! So, I'm very stoked about going up and attending the festivities. I've never been involved in an inaugural ceremony, so I'm looking forward to the water cannon salute, the Maori dancers, and the whole nine yards. Actually, my going up to SFO is two-fold... I can attend the ceremonies at the gate area and on the ramp, but I'm also going to work the evening departure flight, too. As far as the loads are concerned, it looks to be a fairly full flight!

Some head's up about the first flight on 30 June: The only item I can think of aircraft-wise that would be of importance to photographers out there is that the first aircraft is scheduled to be a Lord of the Rings aircraft, though I'm not sure which one, exactly. I can only hope the Bay Area weather cooperates!

On another note, one of our NZ cashiers at SFO is going on a three-week vacation soon, and since we only have two cashiers up there (and the only other one can't possibly work a 16-hour day), I'll be flying up to LAX, working her shift, and flying back to LAX. Talk about a nice little commute to and from work  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hope to see a good turn out for our new AKL-SFO-AKL route. Strong rumor has it that eventually it'll go daily!

Cheers!

As739x and NZBlue, do you know which international terminal NZ will be on? And where will they do the water salute? Any insider tip as to where I can take photo from to see it? Thanks in advance.

It will be arriving on the North side of International, concourse G where all the Star carriers arrive. I imagine that the salute will be done at the end of the United concourse F and there really is no good spot for the public to spot. Due to the length of time the plane is here I'm sure it will be towed off, but most likely to Plot 41 (Super Bay Hanger) where you will need a good zoom lens.

NZBlue, drop me a line if you are around long. I will be working the day it flys in, I'll be out running around the airport to see it. I hope it doesn't come in till after 11 though cause I don't have a releif agent till then. Have fun commuting!

Sorry... This should read "I'll be flying up to SFO, working her shift, and flying back to LAX."

You guys are lucky, because you actually get to see the water cannon salute etc... What a great occasion it will be.
NZBlue: I've also heard the rumour that it will move up to a daily flight, I've heard that it will happen by November or December of this year.

I have a strong feeling that the SFO service and the new LAX-CHC service will eventually be operated by 777's when they're delivered. I know the initial 777's will serve as replacements for several 767's currently on Asian and South Pacific Island routes, but as additional options are converted to firm orders (hopefully!), I can see NZ keeping 747 service on SFO-AKL and LAX-CHC during the high season, but during low season when the loads are a bit lighter, it wouldn't surprise me if the equipment were switched once the triplers start being delivered.

ZKSUJ... with the significant amount of time the SFO 747 will spend just sitting in remote parking between flights, do you think we might see add-on service in the future? Granted, the plane only sits there for 10 hours, so it couldn't, for example, fly to Europe (it would be hard-pressed to fly to the US East Coast, as well), but I would hope an extension of the route would occur at some point. Maybe as additional aircraft join the fleet, this would become more of a realistic idea? I would like to hear your opinions.

Cheers!

Out of 392 seats, there are 6 left for the inaugural flight to SFO. I will check the loadings next week, and let you know if it is all sold out.

I believe ZK-NBV will be operating the first service, this aircraft wears Lord of the Rings Colours!

I believe SFO will go daily in late 2005 if it goes well and will be operated with 772ER's!

NZblue, NZ won't have enough 744's to operate them LAX-CHC and SFO-AKL daily in the high season. Both routes will get 772's i'm pretty sure once there is enough in service.

Doubt that there will be an extension, Air NZ still have 744's on the ground at LAX for hours each day usually 1 or 2 aircraft, you don't see QF flying their 5-6 744's to a different city each day except for the JFK flight 3x weekly.

could that be a reason why AirNZ flights to LAX from AKL and v.v donot make money??
They often have the loadings (except when they have three lax a day 1 via NAN), but why isnt the profits following? I always hear from my Customers that NZ have specials over in LAX to fly to AKL... maybe thats the reason?

Cheers

I never suggested in my previous post that LAX-CHC would go daily, even in the high season. Seems to me that the 3X/week frequency is just about right in terms of realistic demand. All I suggested was that once the 777's start rolling in, I would imagine they would fly this service, thus freeing up a 747 (the same can be said about the SFO service in terms of equipment used).

I have a feeling that SFO-AKL will go daily long before LAX-CHC will. Perhaps if and when SFO-AKL goes daily, thus having to use two aircraft, one will remain parked at SFO awaiting the return service while the other continues on somewhere else, much like present day LAX operations where, depending on the day, one or two AKL-LAX 747's sit in remote parking while the other(s) operate the once-daily flight to Heathrow.

Of course, all this depends on just how many long-haul aircraft NZ decides to acquire in the several years ahead!

In any case, with the addition of the 777's/7E7's, it will be a thrill to see these new birds at LAX  Smile

It would be very nice to see NZ operate into JFK or EWR or IAD, but no news yet. I also think that the route will be taken over by a 777 when it is avaliable, but I also think that 8 744's for NZ is not enough.
Has anyone heard anything about the HKG-LHR route (i believe it is seeking Govt approval in the UK)? Isn't that meant to be on a 744 as well? So the 744's will be pretty tied up by the looks of things.
Hopefully they can continue on to more destinations in Europe or the US east coast in the future, but I think that asian route will be the first to be added.

I have a feeling you will never see an extention of the SFO flight. With a late evening departure, the return leg from an extention city would arrive right at the same time of the evening rush into SFO. The hours of 730p-930p are pretty busy here. I doubt Kiwi wants to get caught up in holding during the winter months and then depart delayed to Auckland.IMO

~Question: Air New Zealands call sign in Kiwi, correct?

Air New Zealand's call sign is simply "New Zealand".

Yes thats right Nz1 I remember reading it.

SUJ is out for a D check anyway so for a new destination it makes sence for a specially painted aircraft to do it!

Yes, ZK-SUJ is currently in for a scheduled D check. However it will not be ready for flight until a week or so after the 1st SFO flight, so yes I guess thats why ZK-NBV is flying it. Just for info, 763ER ZK-NCG has had LOTR decals removed, and normal livery restored. ZK-NBV will have decals removed shortly, and ZK-SUJ will have them removed in November. I can't say too much yet, but watch out towards the end of the year for a special livery on one of the A320's.
