Update: Final 757 In Production

Thu Jun 17, 2004 6:24 am

Guys.. here's parts of an e-mail that was sent around to Boeing employees in Renton, regarding the final 757. I'm just passing on a few facts (excerpts from the full e-mail) that I gleaned from the message that I thought you'd find interesting.

The one thing I never realized, is that Shanghai Airlines is just now getting their 757s, and only 5 at that! Five is kind of a low number for an aircraft type, eh?

God Speed 757...  Sad
Steve

"***The following message is being sent to all Renton Programs employees from Carolyn Corvi, vice president and general manager, 737/757 Programs.***

Update: Last 757 Rolling Celebrations

As many of you are aware, production of the last 757 has begun. The very last airplane, line number 1050, is destined for Shanghai Airlines.

Last month, Shanghai Airlines received the first of the five 757s it has ordered. The airline’s reaction and feedback have been very positive. Shanghai executives have said they are very pleased with the quality of the airplane and look forward to receiving their remaining 757s.
...
A broader celebration will be held when the airplane rolls out of the factory in October. Planning is also under way for a public ceremony when Boeing delivers line number 1050 to Shanghai Airlines in early 2005."

Note to SEA spotters: You had BETTER be there for that event! Royal aka Clickhappy and your compatriots, I beg you to please be on hand, cameras recording every second of these historic events. (Both when the plane rolls out and the final delivery)

Shanghai has many 757's, not just the five they ordered last year.

Of course I will be there, but the weather (November) is a long-shot @ best.

Does this mean they have begun fabricating the fuselage sections in Wichita or have they already arrived in Renton for assembly?

My guess is the tube is on the floor in Wichita.

Oh ok.. thanks for the clarification Royal. You're a champ.. let's just hope that the weather works in our favor!

And Leelaw, I'm not exactly sure what that means as far as it's exact status in production. But I would assume that it's the fabrication. I will defer to Vorticity, Ulfinator or one of my other comrades who is more knowledgable then I on this topic.

By the time they announced to close the line, fall last year, they already had components in stock for a production run til at least 1050, and were stuck with them because CO cancelled their later 757s so there was probably a sweet deal for Xiamen en Shanghai. I imagine those components to be flaps, systems, cockpit panels etc. So the building of # 1050 in fact started earlier, when the first component was being made at a subcontractor.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

I would guess since it's not rolling out until October, that it hasn't reached Renton yet. She mentions rolling celebrations, so I'm guessing they'll have a little celebration in Wichita when they send the last one out, and so forth.

Unfortunately BCAInfoSys, I don't have the inside scoop on this one  Smile It's sad to see it go, if I still lived in Kent I'd be there.

The end of the line is coming for another great airliner. At 1,050 units built, there's no question it's been a success for Boeing. Sorry to see it end.

cheers, Ralph
