NWA Exclusive At MSP Lindberg Terminal

Thu Jun 17, 2004 10:32 am

I read an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune (6/16/04) " NWA seeks more from pilots" by Star Tribune Staff Writer Liz Fedor. In the last two paragraphs it states that Northwest has proposed only SkyTeam members use the Lindberg terminal. All others will use the Humphrey terminal.

If this were to happen do you feel it would be bad for competition and would MSP see additional international flights?

Awful idea. Northwest obviously wants less competition in the main terminal. However, the lightrail system, when it opens, will improve passanger transfers between the two terminals.

If MAC agrees to this they should all be fired. MSP needs MORE competition not less. Get real NWA.

There are many airports where one airline has exclusive use of a terminal. For example, CO has all of Terminal C at EWR. Terminal A and B are there for everyone else, but there would be no way in he** that CO would ever allow anyone else into C. Why is it okay for CO to do so at EWR, but not NW at MSP?

Why is it okay for CO to do so at EWR, but not NW at MSP?

Because the Lindbergh Terminal is HUGE.

Terminal C at EWR has 58 gates. The Lindbergh Terminal at MSP has 117 gates.

NW already faces little competition at MSP (compared to other hub airports), while CO has a wide array of other airlines to compete with at EWR. Comparing C at EWR to Lindbergh at MSP is an apples/oranges thing.

mostly because NWA don't own the Lindbergh Terminal and didn't pay for it. They only lease it. Why should they dictate who can use it,. just because they have 80% of the ASM's out of MSP? I've yet to visit the new Humphrey Terminal but it does look good on the website but it only has 8 gates, 20 at max build out. Is that enough for everyone else except SkyTeam members? Doubt it.

...oops, should have said they only lease some of the gates...not the entire terminal

How many gates are used by airlines that are not NW, KL, DL, CO, and America West? Certainly the 8 gates in the Humphrey Terminal are not enough especially with the other operations in the terminal. NW Management has to be joking.

Actually, NWA does own a good portion of the L terminal, concourse G. In fact, there is a very real possibility that the G concourse will be expanded. Like the new terminal in DTW, NW built the G concourse and has ownership rights.

I'm sure the MAC sees this as an important proposal as NW is a reliable and valued customer. The article also states that US Airways is already considering this proposal from the airport commission. Can't wait to see what happens!

Here's a link to a article in Thursday's Minneapolis Star Tribune which has a story devoted entirely to the issue of NWA having exclusive use of the Lindberg Terminal.

http://www.startribune.com/stories/535/4832654.html

----------------------

The article makes these two statements which I believe are not correct.

1. Northwest leases 101 of the 117 gates at the Lindberg Terminal.

2. Eleven airlines share the other 16 gates in the Lindberg Terminal.

The two statements give you the impression that NWA leases all of the gates it uses at the Lindberg Terminal. I know that is not correct, it is possible that the writer meant to use the term "uses" instead of "leases"

ya know, DL/HP/CO only use a total of 5 gates, thats all we have. AA use to have 4 and UAL has 3, so its hard to say who gets what.

hmmmmm...think NW is trying to keep someone maybe say WN out....many people have suggested in the "Where will WN go next" treads that WN would be good for MSP...if NW has lindberg and 8 gates at Humphrey are obviously occupied by SY Champion and US UA AA F9 FL etc where would anyone else go?
Whether they do it or not...the biggest effect will be the confusion created for UA AA F9 FL US customers who show up at the terminal just to be sent to the other one...
This will be a test of more than anything how much NW runs MAC....NW does have a ton of MSP jobs....this fact should also not be ignored

It should be noted that the light rail between Lindbergh and Humphrey will be outside of the secure area requiring passengers to move through security another time.

With the HHH maxing out at ~16 gates, the possibility of WN, B6, or additional airlines or services diminishes. If this even takes off, the MAC will have to look into expanding the HHH to the north and/or east. There is no demand nor money to do so in the mean time.

It makes sense to do a code-share only terminal. You can then share resources without the other garbage getting in the way.

But, they are not really in the way now. If they were literally in the way, the gates could be rearranged. Most of the Non-NW flights are on the Northwest (Cardinal Direction) side of the Lindbergh Terminal. A list of the airlines that would be displaced to the HHH is pretty long. In the end, the MAC would most likely need to continue building HHH to full size, and eventually expand beyond that.

I doubt WN would fly into MSP. With a little terminal expansion, STP would be more in line with the way WN does business. STP is only a ten or fifteen minute drive from MSP.

What about the F concourse? Is that only NW? I only see NW aircraft at the F gates everytime I go to MSP.

AsstChiefMark,

I doub't that the MAC will allow any commercial service into STP. It is mainly for general aviation, and corporate aircraft. There is not a terminal for an airline there, so WN would have to build it. I doubt that WN or any airline will ever serve STP.

STP? Are they planning to build a wall around it? Every few years it floods and even long after the floods are over they need to keep a/c off of it until the ground dries out. 3-4 years back it was closed for over 3 months.

MSP: What about the discussions that NWA is looking at demolishing some of the hangers just off the south end of the G wing? That could expand G as far south as the old Green (ABC) now extends.

Jist of what NWA is looking to do is to move UAL, US, AA and Frontier to the Humphrey, while keeping their partners Continental and Delta. What would happen to the daily Icelandic? Customs at Humphrey or Customs at Lindbergh?

Icelandair would most likely stay at the main terminal because it is serviced by NW out of the G concourse.

If WN were to fly to any airport in MN besides MSP, it would be STC. Only 60 miles outside of Minneapolis with an existing terminal for XJ flights to MSP.
