Why Did Rafik Hariri Pick 777 Instead Of A340?

Fri Jun 18, 2004 4:58 am

Let me make it clear that this is a question based completely on a political standpoint and has nothing to do with Airbus vs. Boeing. Read on...

I was wondering, why the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Rafik Hariri picked the Boeing 777-200ER as his private jet instead of the A340-300? Lebanon and the Hariri maintain very very close relations with France.

Hariri visits France and meets with Jacque Chirac usually at least once a month. He has a mansion on the island of Corsica and I think he has a home in Paris.

With the many political and economic ties, you would have thought he would have bought Airbus.

Then again, there may be no reason at all and he simply prefered the 777 over the A340. I'm sure France wasn't too happy about his decision to buy Boeing instead of Airbus.

Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the 108th richest man in the world worth $4.3 billion. He is the CEO of the major construction firm, Oger International.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

It wasn't a Government purchase, so why should he have bought the A340?

Tony Blair owns a Chrysler Grand Voyager. He bought that with his own money too. Should he have bought a Renault (urgh!) because Britain is in the EU?

Could be for the same reason airlines do: more range & payload.

The 777 has a wider cabin which might make it appealing from a comfort and payload aspect. It also has a higher cruise mach and greater range. Who knows.. maybe he thought it just looked cool.

Reading of just how France and Lebanon maintained a good relationship than its not about politics but more about the economics (purchase price and maintenance) and maybe the thrill factor???

Having flown both, by far 777 has much more impressive flying experience... This is nothing to do with the capability of the A343, but being an aviation enthusiast its just not a fun plane to fly on.

Also, isn't the PM a pilot himself? So therefore he must have higher favorablity towards Boeing?  Wink/being sarcastic

Oger is also a Saudi company.

Saudi Arabian Airlines operate the 777 with GE90 engines, just like the Oger one.

Servicing and spares were probably part of the consideration.

Best combination of performance, range, interior space and lower fuel costs, significantly lower maintenance costs and overall lower operating costs.

Thanks for all the feedback.

It wasn't a Government purchase, so why should he have bought the A340?

Like I said, he himself has very very close connections with France. He invests in France a lot, and he owns a mansion in Corsica and I believe has a home in Paris.

He has a lot of French business connections.

Having flown both, by far 777 has much more impressive flying experience... This is nothing to do with the capability of the A343, but being an aviation enthusiast its just not a fun plane to fly on.

I completely agree. From a personal perspective, I'm glad he chose the 777 instead of the A340.

I've flown the A340-300 three times and the 777-200 about probably 15 times and I by far prefer the 777 in every way.

Also, isn't the PM a pilot himself?

Nope.

Well maybe he wanted to keep a balance Between A and B....MEA has airbus and he has Boeing.

Speaking of MEA. He was largely responsible for helping MEA acquire its new A321 and A330 fleet. He helped them politically, as MEA is government owned.

Oger is also a Saudi company.

Saudi Oger is a Saudi company.

However the parent company, Oger International is French. He bought the company in the early 80's, but kept its French identity.

He recently started Oger Liban (Liban is French for Lebanon).

Saudi Arabian Airlines operate the 777 with GE90 engines, just like the Oger one.

Servicing and spares were probably part of the consideration.

Servicing is done by a European maintenance contractor. The name of the contractor currently escapes me however...

Whatever airplane he chose, he should think of a better colorscheme.

His old 727adv had also these discreet cheatlines, but he could spend a couple of $$$ on having a graphic designer pulling up something fresh.

cheaper operating costs per seat in airline configuration but not per flight.

The 777 has a wider cabin which might make it appealing from a comfort and payload aspect.

Clearly, this is a good reason. The 777 lends itself better to the VIP configuration than a 340.

That hasn't stopped anyone from getting the 340, however.

Roberta - Not so, even on an absolute trip cost basis the 777-200ER beats the A340-300 (admitedly just barely).

But even if they were a wash, the larger cabin area and greater performance - more range, more payload, faster cruise of the 777-200ER gives you a better airplane.

Maybe He wanted to save on maintenance cost. The A340 has 4 engines when the 777 has 2.
He's also sacrificing more space. The 777-200 can hold up to 305 seats yet the 340-300 can hold up to 335. Not saying that he will invite 300 of this friends over.
Why would he compare the 340 to the 777 when the 777 will salutar the 340-300. He should of open his eyes a little wider so he could see the A340-500
If I had the chance to chose any 340's I would go for the 345s.
4 decks 4 engines 4 long haul

VSX380X800,

Some info to clarify: the 777-200ER offers much more cabin area than the A340-300 (cabin area is measured at arm-rest height above the floor, sidewall to sidewall, and bulkhead to bulkhead), it's a common measurement VIP completion centers use to spec out a new interior.

The 777-200 provide 218 sq meters of cabin are .vs. only 194.9 for the A340-300. The 777 is also significantly wider which VIP operators find attractive.

In similar passenger config's, a 3 class 777-200ER at 301 seats would be equivalent to only 262 seats for the A340-300. In fact, you would have to go all the way up to the A340-600 to get more cabin area (236.9 sq meters) but if you are going to go that big, go for the 777-300/-300ER to get 263.9 sq. meters !!

GoMEA,

It's a private jet. Private jets are very rarely painted with anything more than cheatlines.

They try to keep a low profile and this is why they never paint anything else besides a cheatline.

I think it's because he is a Boeing customer. He owns a number of Boeings including a 727-200 and at least one 737NG.

OD720,

He has a 727-200, a 737-700BBJ, and a 737-800BBJ.

However the 737s were bought after he bought the 727.

Do you have any idea what he uses the 727 for these days?

I am pretty sure his two 737s are used by his sons who work for his company, Saudi Oger.

I think the 727 is currently used by his wife. I also hear that it is sometimes used to fly some of his good friends, like a treat. I may be wrong though on this one.

If he keeps going on like this, hes going to have a personal fleet bigger than MEA's soon Big grin

But seriously, I think it is because of the aircraft itself having more cabin space. I doubt the PM is going to fill it with seats, so he isnt worried about that. Also, IMO the B772 is a more impressive a/c than the A343, and in my personal opinion it is a better choice.

well not according to PIA.

Although from what i have read the A343 is specifically for long haul (due to the A333 compliment) whereas the 772ER does well with all of the ranges.

Mr. Hariri's

B777 pilots are Australians and Italians.
B727 pilots are Russians and Syrians.
B737 Pilots are Germans and Greeks.
Business jet fleet's pilots are all westerners.

His flight attendants are pretty Italians.

Where are Lebanese?.

Rb211Itn,

Boeing company delivered this aircraft directly to Hariri's company in 22/10/1999.

Its first flight was to Geneva-Switzerland where it was furnished and decorated according to Hariri's order (This took more than 6 months), before it entered his fleet in the year 2000.

The Hariri 777 interior fitting was done at Hamburg by Lufthansa Technic.
Lufthansa Technic also does the heavy maintenance
Having the same GE90 then Saudia there could be a possibility that the delivery position was bought from Saudi and then delivered to him.

MEA330.

My source was a nurse, member of Hariri's medical team who is used to fly with him.

Thanks anyway for the correction.
