Will Pax A380s Be Easily Converted To Freighters?

Fri Jun 18, 2004 5:47 am

Are the upper deck and under-carriage, etc., structures significantly different on the pax and cargo versions of the A380? Is conversion from pax to cargo confirguration feasible should the anticipated passenger traffic not materialize as was the case with the 747 in the mid-seventies?

I would assume that there are no bigger problems to convert pax A380 to freighter... otherwise airbus has (will be) made a BIG mistake!!!

The structure will be different from the Freighter.
There is a need for ducting and wiring for two cabin's. And also the 10ft X 20ft hole needed for the staircase. For A380 (pax) to have the upperdeck strength needed for cargo operations later on in life would require extra weight. That's the last thing Airbus would want to do.

Not necessarily, With the added weight issue covered above there one more thing.
Manufactures rarely see much money in aircraft conversions. Being that by the time a Pax aircraft has seen the end of it's days the manufacture will no longer have any finaical involvement with the aircraft.

Also the majority of conversions are done by 3rd party's that have developed a conversion program on their own or by a 3rd party that has bought an conversion STC from the manufacture for a "small" fee.

So from a money aspect, it would be in Airbuses best interest to keep the aircraft "lighter" and develop an STC to sell later on in the future.

Either way, Airbus also offers the A380-800F version. FedEx was the launch customer with 8 firm orders and 12 more options. This baby will lift 300,000 Lbs of payload - twice as much as the current MD-11's!!
