China Airlines Interested In Ecuador

Fri Jun 18, 2004 11:03 am

I was reading a local Ecuadorian newspaper and came across this article. The article is in spanish, but it basically says that China Airlines is interested in establishing flights via Toronto to Quito, Ecuador. CI also offered to help in building the new airport in Quito which should be ready by 2007. But I don't understand why they choose Quito and not Guayaquil since it is a bigger city with more traffic flow. But besides that, I think this would be a great link between Asia and South America.

Ecuador? Is this one of the few countries in the region that has diplomatic ties with Taiwan? I'd think PTY would make a better choice since it enjoys better connections. In fact Eva Air actually flew the route not too long ago.

EVA used to fly from TPE to Panama via LAX. EVA was the only Taiwanese airliners serving Central/South America but due to low demand, it was discontinued. EVA's somewhat parent company, Evergreen Marine Corporation has many ships with Panama registrations.
I wonder how demanding this CI's route would be.....

There are many reasons why EVA stopped flying to PTY. Some say it was political and some say that the planes weren't filled. I used to take the PTY - TPE long time ago, but it was very hard to get a seat since the LAX-TPE segment was filled most of the time making no sense for me to take EVA from PTY. I guess EVA wasn't able to get as many passenger for the PTY - LAX segment only. I hope CI can fix this problem for their future flights to Ecuador.

By the way, Ecuador doesn't recognize Taiwan as a country. So, no political ties there.

Sounds like they've done their demographic homework. The largest group of hispanics in YYZ is not Mexicans but Ecuadorians. There are no current nonstop flights betw Canada & Ecuador.

With both large Ecuadorian and Taiwanese communities in YYZ, this could be economically feasible.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
