Aircraft Slides Off MUC Runway

Sun Jun 20, 2004 7:21 pm

An aircraft has slid of the runway at Munich's International Airport. The plane was coming from Mallorca and had 176 passengers on board. They all left the plane safely. There isn't more information at the moment.

Saw it on Spiegel.de (in German)

Hi there,
it was a B737 of Air Europe... The runway was wet and on a runway turnoff they slid of the rwy and stuck into the grass. The runway was closed for several hours!
176 on board, no injuries! The Passengers left the aircraft via stairs...

Thanks god, not more happened...

They just stated on TV that it seems like it has been an error by the pilot...

Anyway, the northern of MUC's two parallel RWY's was closed for several hours because the a/c was stuck in a waterhole. That caused delays especially for departures for up to an hour...

And actually the aircraft was coming from Dresden and was supposed to leave later on for PMI, not the other way round!

This also happened one Monday morning last year when it rained after a long dry spell. On this occasion it was a Spanair MD80 that slid off a southern runway turnoff and got stuck in the mud. Apparently those runway exits can get awfully slippy when wet. I got delayed several hours because of this incident (we got diverted to Nuremburg). Thankfully no-one was injured, just a few muddy shoes.
