Landing In SFO And IAD - Which Is The Better Side?

Mon Jun 21, 2004 5:29 am

I will be flying into IAD and SFO this June 25 and 29 respectively and I would like to know which side of the aircraft offers a better view of downtown DC and San Francisco. Currently I have 20F on United A320 for SAN-SFO and I can't get a seat request for EWR-IAD. Please advise.

Warmest regards,
Odie

I fly in/out of IAD every week. Doesn't matter where you sit, IAD is too far from DC to see the city (25 miles or so). In SFO you'll have to check the winds before departing, so you know which RWY config they are using, but you'll have a good view on either side.

Odie...You will not get to see downtown San Francisco coming from San Diego. If you sit on the right side you will see San Jose off to the right, as well as Stanford U. On the turn to final in the distance you may see downtown San Francisco and Oakland. The pattern arriving from the south generally will not take you near the city. During the winter months when arrivals use 19R/L they will circle the city when coming from the SoCal area, but not this time of year. Summer winds favor arrivals landing west on 28L/R. My preference would be the right side so on arrival you see Monterey,Santa Cruz, San Jose with Stanford U. Right below you, then the east bay when lined up on final. The chances are also better of getting airplane lined up for the 28R right next to you. That way you get to look at the other passengers staring at your plane, or so it seems.

Have a good flight

Seldom get a good view of Stanford as you normally fly directly overhead the stadium. Left side of plane is best opportunity to see "the City" but it'll be very distant and not much of a view. OTOH, the right side of the plane will give you views most of the flight while the left side gives you a USN pilot's view of the world..... water...water...water.  Wink/being sarcastic

As mentioned, IAD is also too distant to see any of the D.C. landmarks. You'll land long before they become visible. Doesn't matter what side you get for that flight as there will not be any landmarks to see except the airport itself and what runway you'll use is a 50/50 guess.

Arriving at SFO from the east coast, I like the left side, You can see all of San Jose and SJC, then Stanford University and the Penninsula and have a great view of the hotels before you land. The right side you can see Oakland, sometimes if it is very clear, you can see San Francisco as you make the right turn to line up to the runways.

Assuming the weather will be good at SFO(in which you will land coming in from the south), which side you should sit on depends on what you would like to see. If you sit on the left, you will have awesome views of the SF suburbs and the SF Bay shoreline, airport hotels(esp.Sheraton, Hyatt, Marriott)and, once on the ground, good views of the terminals and a wide selection of aircraft. If you sit on the right, you will get all water views with a cool overhead view of the San Mateo Bridge. The East Bay and Oakland will be off in the distance and sometimes you can see downtown SF way, way off in the distance.

If the weather is poor or windy, the planes land from the north. I have only landed this way once, but sitting on the right side of the plane afforded me amazing views of downtown SF, the Bay Bridge, 3Com(Candlestick Park) and the Bay. I am not as familiar with arrivals from this direction, though, so I am not the best authority on it.

Hope this helps.

With IAD, you won't get a view of much of anything except some neighborhoods and office parks.

If you ever fly into DCA (along the southerly approach) you want a left (A) window, however the right side view can be interesting too with the buildings of Rosslyn very close and then the view of Iwo Jima, Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon.

I love the approach to IAD from any direction...just seeing the rolling green hills of Virginia on the way in is great, and one of the reasons I prefer IAD over say ORD, DEN, SFO, etc. Only SEA and PDX have more scenic approaches, IMO.

As far as IAD goes, my favorite is the approach to 12. Re: views of DC, there is one approach that on a clear day you can see the city and the Washington monument. I did it last August coming in from BOS. We flew east of the airport, then turned right, and right again and landed 1R. As we flew the downwind leg, I was on the left side and could see the city in the distance and the Washington monument. Apart from that, yeah...lots of office parks, etc.

IAD, as mentioned before you can't see anything interesting, so...
as for SFO, all my landing there (5) have been on the 28's and I've had both sides of the aircraft, my favorite being the right side, since you fly over the bay and it's cool seeing the water rush by as your landing.

I had a really good view of the mall area when I flew into DCA last time and I was hoping that it would be the same for IAD. I think I will stick to the right side for SFO and thank you all for the replies. Really apperciate it!

Sit on the left side of the aircraft too SFO, always a nice landing as you get a nice view of Paulo Alto and the other communities and you have the freeway so you can race the cars to the airport  Big thumbs up
