KLM Pulling Out Of MIA (? )

Mon Jun 21, 2004 11:11 am

Good Evening.

I read a post a couple days ago were it briefly mentioned that KLM is pulling out of MIA. Why is that? Anything to do w/ the AF/KLM deals that are going around? It would be 2nd city I hear of over on this side of the world that will not longer having KLM service. I will sure miss those MD11's!

If so, what airliners are planning on filling this spot? If any. Also just my 2 cents, but maybe AA will venture out and start MIA-AMS service to compliment its hub in MIA and its 4 other EURO routes out of MIA.

(ps. my apologies if that was touched upon before and I missed it!)

If so, what airliners are planning on filling this spot?

Martinair Holland is increasing MIA-AMS from 5w to 7w, and Air France is increase MIA-CDG from 7w to 10w. That's a total of 5w new non-stops, making up for the loss of KLM's 7w non-stops. Also, there are some rumours that Air France may be operating MIA-CDG 14w this winter. This is somewhat supported by the fact that the second frequency is showing up as 3w on AF, but 7w as a DL codeshare. We should know what's really going to happen soon, because that could very well just be a computer glitch which happens often.

Also just my 2 cents, but maybe AA will venture out and start MIA-AMS service to compliment its hub in MIA and its 4 other EURO routes out of MIA.

Highly doubtful. The MIA-AMS market is well served with Martinair's soon to be daily service. I do think AA will add a new Euro route from Miami in 2005, but it will most likely be Brussels or Rome.

MIAskies.

KL is actually flying B767s on the route currently. They down graded from
the MD-11 last year. With the fall schedule as stated above the MIA
flights will terminate and KL will restart AMS-ATL service. The passengers
from MIA to AMS will have the choice of MP with a daily flight or routing
through CDG on AF as they will have 2 flights daily MIA-CDG

If they downgraded to B767's from MD11's "last year" as stated above, then why are there so many photo of KLM's MD-11's at MIA in January, February and March of THIS year on this site? That's some excellent Photoshop manipulation by all of those photogs.

Will you even think about KL will leave from MIA into late of 2004? They will transfer from MIA to ATL very soon. It will be good with them.

KLM flew the MD11 untill march 31st this year, It's 5 times a week and not 7. AMS - MIA will be discontinued around 15th of september when KLM starts flying to ATL again. KLM pax will not be rerouted through CDG because they have a joint venture with NWA on all trans atlantic flights. The agreement does not apply to AF flights. So, KLM will NOT be booked on Martinair or AF. They will just have to fly through DTW, MSP or MEM

I was going to say, either I am seeing double but I could have sworn that I saw MD11's landing not to long ago on the runway with my very eyes and on pics on A.NET.

Well although I am sad to see KLM go, I must say glad to hear Martinair will have a much better presence in MIA, being a long time carrier here. Also, AF doing twice daily service sounds great! Will it also be a on 744? Or A343? Or maybe 777?

Thanks !

Right now a mix of 343s and 744s, though you may see some 772/773s coming in the future because the 777 fleet will soon be the only ones with F class, and MIA has high F demand form Paris during the winter months.

MIA-AMS was started by NW using DC-10 aircraft. When NW replaced KLM in MEM, KLM picked up MIA.

Don't forget that KLM still owns 50% of Martinair. Not sure where AF fits in that deal.

a problem are the fares, which are just too low, LX probably will also pull out of MIA, good loads, but no money!

to low??? please tell me where I can get those! hahaha. Hmm would be great to see the AF772 in MIA but even better the AF 773's.

Any word on Martinair upgrading their fleet on this route? or continue w/ 763's? not sure if they have larger aircraft for their passenger routes. Although Ive seen their MD11F here at Mia.

That is incorrect. MIA fares to Europe are quite high, especially because Miami attracts high-yielding tourists. Swiss has no plans on pulling out of MIA, which is a strong yielding market for them, since the premium cabins fill easily on thier MIA-ZRH service. It also connects them to American's Caribbean and Latin American network, which they codeshare on. MIA is supposedly Swiss' second best yielding trans-Atlantic route after JFK-GVA, though that could have changed.

Good call MAH, I was like low fare to Europe from MIA? WHERE? Because MIA-MAD is going for USD$1000+ Right now on IB and I am sure on AA as well

Well, you can get them, but they are hard to find.

The problem KLM had on MIA-AMS is that they had to compete with Martinair Holland. Martinair Holland offers lowfares on MIA-AMS, and KLM pretty much had to match them, which killed KLM's yield. LTU also offers pretty low fares from Miami on MIA-DUS and MIA-MUC. Though that's about it.

"So, KLM will NOT be booked on Martinair or AF"

Wrong. To quote KLM :

"Bestaande boekingen zullen zoveel mogelijk worden omgeboekt op de directe dienst van Martinair (MP)."

Existing reservations will be rebooked on MP to the greatest extent possible.

Boy, will that ever please KL pax on full fare J tickets!

I wasn't wrong because I get from your quote that they are talking about tickets already booked on the KLM/NW AMS-MIA flights after they are discontinued.
You won't find MP AMS - MIA flights trying to book a ticket through KLM, just check their timetable.......

MP uses a dual class aircraft on the flights, not their dense packed charter aircraft (unless maybe when required because of an unscheduled equipment change).

Not correct. When NW replaced KLM at Memphis, KLM picked up IAD, thereby reducing IAD from a DC10 to a 767. KLM picked up MIA in a swap with MSP between the two airlines, at which point KLM didn't go to MSP anymore with its own airframes, though that might have changed already as well.

Rumours were that KLM would pull out but heard from KLM station manager at GRU that will probably not happen.... Nothing certain though. They will be adding a flight in november by the way.
