SFO Bags Another One: Thai International

Tue Jun 22, 2004 10:54 pm

Radio just reported that TG will begin 3x weekly service to SFO in 2005. No specifics on routing, aircraft, etc. This is part of a U.S. expansion that will also see service to New York-JFK.

Not sure if WestJet will use the International Terminal (not required because flights from Canada are pre-cleared). If so, thats three new occupants within two years including Air New Zealand and Thai. Hopefully the new International Terminal will begin to fill up to pre-9/11 levels.

8 new 345's and 346's will come into the fleet next year while 18 744's are leaving the fleet.

TG talks of 3x weekly BKK-SFO, 3x weekly BKK-JNB, 3x weekly BKK-SVO and 6x weekly BKK-JFK sometime in 2005. Besides JNB and SVO, I wonder if any of these routes will be non-stop.

I wouldn't count on any of this. TG is good at press releases that come to nothing and with less than daily service all TG will get are the cheap economy fares. They have no hope at F & J traffic and without F & J traffic these routes have little prospect of success.

The BKK-JNB route has been discussed for the past 9 months and still nothing has come of it so let's wait and see how this latest Thai rumour evolves.

Considering that TG just decreased frequency to the USA, it would seem odd that TG would announce new gateways... especially given the fact that they closed all US sales offices save one very small and extremely disfunctional office in LAX. They are not equipped to handle any increase in service, let alone new U.S. gateways.

TG is one of the world's worst managed airlines. They bring dysfunction to a level no one has ever previously dreamed of. Put it this way... they make Air Namibia's management look professional.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

I was on a flight from HKG-JNB on CX, and met about 4 TG senior pilots enroute. They were to take over the incoming THAI MD-11 aircraft carrying the Thai PM on a trade mission from BKK to South America via JNB a few days later. Upon chatting to them, they said that TG is planning to fly the A345s nonstop from BKK to LAX, SFO, JFK and possibly ORD next year.

One correction: the 18 744's are not leaving the fleet. They will be retrofitted with new F and J seats and new IFE.

Will they install PTVs on every single economy class seats?

What about their B 747-300s??? Will they leave the fleet anytime soon?

I agree w/PA110. TG's marketing & management in US is a total failure. They have had such an inferior F & C product for so long that they'll have an extremely difficult time introducing new services and making a profit.

Why would a business passenger fly TG when for the same $ one can fly NW with fine seats, AVOD & a far better mileage program. No amount of wine & caviar can compensate for their lousy product.

I used to fly TG LAX-BKK abt 6x yr. Never again. Too many broken promises.

oh, and VN is starting service in 2005 as well. 2005 seems like it will be a great year for SFO, and the bay area.

Those new A345 and A346 will come with brand new IFE.
If I am not wrong, Matsushita 5000 or something, more advanced than SQ's IFE.
And also new F C and Y class seats. Hope they can sell some seats up in the front!!  Wink/being sarcastic
Let's just blame it on yields.
