How Long Till New Medium Haul Design?

Wed Jun 23, 2004 1:37 am

Just as Boeing has put forth the 7E7 design and Airbus the A380 to replace older long haul designs, when will a new short-medium haul design be put forth?

As far as market demand, AA is going to have to replace some 300+ MD-80's within 10-15 years. The 737NG will be obsolete by then.

A smaller scale version of the 7E7 would look possible. That could be done within 5-6 years.

Boeing has stated that the future 737 replacement will be based on 7E7 technology.

However, the Delta/American MD-80 replacemet you talk about is likely to go to the 737NG. The 737 will be in production for quite a few years down the line--Large backlog already, US military just ordered it as a P-3 replacement (other militaries are likely to follow), WN and other LoCos are still growing at a healthy rate, and of course the hundreds of MD-80s that need to be replaced.
