NW- Odds Of Aircraft With N/c?

Fri Jun 25, 2004 3:00 am

Hey guys

Im flying out to Austin tomorrow for 2 weeks of fun with my forensics friends  Smile
We're flying Northwest on the following flights:

6/25 NW653 EWR-DTW D93
6/25 NW223 DTW-AUS 319

We tried to keep a secret from two of my friends about the DC-9 because they are afraid to fly, but they did some research of their own and are now frightened that the airplane is so old. I've been trying to calm them down... but it's not working!!

It's my hope that if they see the aircraft in new colors, it MIGHT ease their nerves a little bit... so my question is, what is the current breakdown of new colors versus old colors?

If anyone knows which DC-9 might be opping 653 tomorrow, thatd be awesome, but that isn't the purpose of this thread. I just want to know what the odds are of getting a new colored aircraft!

Thanks a lot

Most of the DC-9's in Northwest's fleet have not yet been repainted. However they are scrambling to do so. The flight you are taking tomorrow will most likely be a DC-9-50 if that is the case, there is a better chance that it will appear in its new makeover. If it is a DC-9-30 the odds are less. Good luck with your trip. Have Fun!

I fly on NW DC-9s all the time. Tell them nothing to worry about. They look great inside.

A a little more than a quarter of the fleet has been repainted, last I heard.

Have a great trip!

On the other hand, a lot of the 9's in the new c/s really show the exhaust markings a lot more visably than those in the old c/s. Not riding on a plane because it's older seems so overblown to me...it'd be one thing if there were reliability problems with these birds, but as mentioned, they have nice new interiors, are the workhorse of a relatively solid airline, and get people to/from where they need to go.
I plan on living forever. So far, so good...

Old DC9s!!!! Big grin

I routinely fly to MEM on a DC9-14 (10? maybe). I asked the pilot once and he told me that the aircraft was delivered in 1966. That made it 16 years old when I was born  Nuts Saddly now it always seems to be that hideous Arvo Arvoliner. What a PoC in comparison to the DC9!!!

I'd rather fly one of NW's DC-9's then a new CRJ..

Gotta love the old -9s. I will tell you though...I feel more comfortable flying in my 172 cause I am flying. But, I echo the posts above. I would definately fly in a -9 than a CRJ...more room.

NWA757, he said D93 for the DC-9 leg. He didn't say D95, the DC-9-51. Now, back to the point, chances are, you'll get the new colors. Here in PIT, You'll be lucky to see the old colors. By the way, if you get N994Z, let me know. It's my favorite DC-9-32. It's used for my new ******** (I censored out something for security reasons. If I didn't, I'd be doomed!)

Thanks a lot-

It looks like N364NB might be among the newest A319s in the fleet. I passed the word on to my friend, and she was happy.

Thanks again!

Just to pass it along..

If those numbers remain accurate, then the aircraft are:

DC-9-31 N8923E (1967)
A319-100 N364NB (2003)

Thanks

NWADC9, et al.,

N994Z is, I believe, the only former Ozark DC-9 in our fleet. I could be mistaken. I once read an article that stated while operating an Ozark flight, the landing gear on one side of the plane collapsed, causing the wing to snap off. The plane was repaired and put back into service, and eventually sold off to Republic Airlines. The rest, as they say, is history. I hope that I have the correct plane.

I'll have to find the article. I think it's in a back issue of AIRLINERS.

Kind of OT, but my only complaint about "old" aircraft is the rather faded and abused interior. Now I know it costs a lot of money to redo interiors, but I think it helps to have a well maintained interior for passengers, so they have more confidence in the aircraft actually getting them to their destination. Same with a good paintjob.

But from what I know NW has pretty new interiors in the DC9s, so thats good news for me, since I'll be flying one from DTW to ALB in a few weeks.
