Orient Thai L1011 Burglarized And Vandalized

Fri Jun 25, 2004 3:47 pm

It is reported in Thai local newspapers that Lockheed L1011 rego XU-700 owned by Orient Thai Airlines was burglarized while stored at U-Tapao airport. Items stolen include 50 life jackets, 6 oxegen tanks, 4 raft as well as some cockpit instruments. The burglars also vandalized the aircraft interiors and tried to burn the aircraft but was not successful. The damage is estimated as over $250,000.

This is weird. The aircraft is parked in a large airport under Royal Thai Navy control. This airport also serve commercial flights to the eastern part of Thailand. This kind of security lapse should never happen!

Can't wait to get one of those life rafts...is an L1011 even worth $250Gs? Do they even operate L1011 equip in their fleet? Last ones I've seen are refuges for rattle snakes and cayotes in Arizona.

And in China a sack of rice fell down...

Just kidding of course.  Smile However, things like this happen each and every day. it is just a pity that my favorite aircraft type was affected.

Did they leave the rest of the aircraft on top of cinderblocks?  Laugh out loud

ATA> These Saudi L1011s are for sale for 5 years now, mark my words, they will never see service again, at least not for 1,2 million. This asking price is rediculous... although I would have liked to see it differently.
Syrianair is also trying to sell their 2 Caravelles for $1 million or so... for 10 years already.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Wow, $250,000 (i guess USD) is a whole lot of money for damaged or stolen articles. Getting out $250,000 worth of avionics or other equipment would have taken a good size group of people a good while to rip out of the plane.

Anyone have any pics or a list of stolen articles? I would like to know what can be quickly taken out of a plane that totals a quarter of a million bucks. Thats why we have insurance i guess!

This is perhaps not surprising in a third world country.

The Lauda 763 that crashed in rural Thailand years ago was stripped bare by locals before rescuers could reach the aircraft. Although all on board died, the thought that personal belongings were stolen while those bodies were still warm, was sickening.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

MEA yes I know they have alot of older equipment for sale at prices that are rediculously high. On egood thing about those Tristars is that they have very low cycles and hours on the frames.
